I'm currently a member at a Goodlife gym and I have no complaints. I pay around $45 a month in membership fees.

There's a YMCA nearby and I'm tempted to switch because then I could walk to the gym. It also has slightly better hours than Goodlife.

Anyone have any experiences with the YMCA? What's the cost like? There's nothing on the website.

I'm more interested in equipment availability and gym conditions than issues with billing.

YMCA is great if it's close to you. Only downside is their limited number of locations in my opinion.

I used to live within walking distance of a YMCA and I had no complaints at all. I only quit it when I moved away and it was going to be a subway ride to get to the gym. I switched at that point to one closer, and in my opinion, inferior.

What the YMCA tends to have that others lack are a lot of sports teams and classes in addition to the regular workout stuff. Whether you like that or not is a personal preference, but even if you don't, in my experience their gym was of good quality.

It might depend on WHICH location. YMCA member is "global", I went to a Y in another city when I was a member and found the gym in that city substandard. So I guess go check out the one near you and see what it's like--the two downtown Toronto are both good in my opinion.

Caveat--my experience was 10 years ago.

The YMCA is great. I like that they have a pool and it's not as pretentious as some of the other clubs. The prices are fair and most if not all include access to a pool which is pretty rare. The one downtown is very good.

You can get a two week pass here to try it out.

I really like the YMCA, but that's because they offer exactly what I'm looking for: Clean, working exercise and cardio machines, a large indoor pool and a community of members who actually talk to and help each other. I don't usually join any of the fitness classes nor the rec sports, but having them as an option is nice. From what I've learned, the YMCA gives their staff more training than any other gym out there such as standard first aid and the company goes through regular maintenance and safety checks as well as quarterly audits of operations. I've seen the staff do it. Having worked at government and non-government companies, seeing another organization be so strict about safety and standards is a huge plus in my book. My girlfriend and parents also feel safe there because of their community/family atmosphere and not having any muscleheads (Extreme Fitness) or steroid dealers (Premiere Fitness) there. I don't mind paying more for higher standards. At my previous gym I was paying $25/month (less than half of what I pay for the YMCA) for many years but the company went bankrupt and since then I'm not confident about gyms that charge really low just to make a sale.
