[A Quarter Inch Fall]

A construction worker was killed in a grisly industrial accident in the city’s north end Monday afternoon.

The 25-year-old man was at a job site on Rivalda Rd., near Sheppard Ave. W. and Weston Rd., when he was struck by an errant beam around 1:20 p.m., Toronto Police said.

“It was a heavy steel beam,” Const. Tony Vella added. “He was hit in the head.”

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s name was not released and few details were available.

It was not immediately clear if the man was wearing a helmet while he was working on the housing development, or if head protection would have even made a difference.

Some reports suggested wind may have been a factor.

I wonder if the cop killed on the job was wearing a vest and if it would have made a difference against a 2 tonne truck?

Every year many more construction workers die doing their jobs.

We don't know the full story. Ever been an ironworker? I didn't think so. If he was green and didn't know his job, then whoever was working with him should have known better.

These deaths are usually covered up, liability pushed downwards, and the company does everything it can to avoid any liability (a thing like this can bankrupt even a larger company due to increased insurance premiums).

As well as ironworkers, I have seen carpenters, labourers and others install this type of beam. It appears to have been a lintel over a garage door, so it could have been any one of a number of trades.

I have installed steel beams, and I am not an ironworker.

It's a great shame and loss. Trying to see that it doesn't happen to someone else is all we who didn't know him can do.

Just like the frustrating and never-ending work of educating people they can't drink and drive safely, the work of teaching that safety's your first task and most important assignment on every job can never ever be finished.

Maybe he spent years in deep cover in the construction industry and had to be pulled because he was losing it and becoming one of them; or not.

i did construction and was high off the ground while doing it and a wrong step or misplaced piece of material with what i was working could have very likely killed me just as easy. if he was green he should not have been up there and regardless he should have been looking at what was going on around him. anyone i a physical job with any sort of risk needs to have constant motion of your eyes always looking out for possible dangers. whomever was training him did a bad job, he failed at his job and his boss should not have let him up there.

the problem we have right now is that the economy is shit and people are getting let go from their regular jobs and taking the only thing they can find and saying "yes sir i can do that" whether they can or not for the fear of getting fired. it is a damn shame this happened and any changes in the industry are going to be reactionary and that is a major problem, lots of problems with safety issues that won't get changed till someone dies.

and to answer your question of whether i did that kind of work. i will tell you a quick story. i relied on a guy to place the joists i walk on, well he stopped to light a smoke and didn't tell me and i stepped back without looking and fell 15 and ruined my back which caused me to not be able to do that job anymore. it should have been a lot worse, i might be dead right now but i got lucky. as lucky as a person who got sloppy on a dangerous job can get.
