Pre-ordered mine from back in June. Arrived on Oct 22 as promised. Installed 64bit version yesterday (clean install, i.e. wiped out everything).
From the time I put in the DVD to the time I was connected to internet and surfing, installing apps, was about 20 minutes. Best Windows installation by far, totally pain free. Driver support and automation is 100 times better than Vista, you literally have to click go and then type in your user name and done.
Better than Vista for sure, nice neat and sleek features, snappier, looks better. Quite a jump from XP in terms of layout though but not something you can't get used to in 30 minutes.
Be sure to back up your old stuff if you're doing a clean install which is recommended or required if coming from XP. I've heard that "upgrading" can take as long as 5 hours.

I have a dell I am not sure if the plug in and install will work . since it's all dell stuff. I have the drivers for everything. but I just don't want to screw it up
maybe i should bring into future shop where i bought and get them to install it or call dell and see what they offer.
I installed mine on a Dell. Windows 7 driver support is very good so all the plug and pray components should be recognized without a hitch. I was skeptical at first too since previous versions of windows sucked, but after installing Win7 it worked great.
I checked out the specs on the Dell Inspiron 1525 and you should have no problems installing it. But if you're unsure the futureshop techies should be able to do it no problem. The most time consuming part of any installation though is backing up your old stuff.

I will back it up first, then I will ask around at future shop since I know they are hurting for comission and I will probably end up buying windows 7 on my own and doing it.
Since the dell website says its supported by it. I got alot of my nudity photos I need to keep.

You can do and upgrade to W7 from Vista.
However a clean install usually works better.
Just save and backup whatever you want first.
Personally I would do a clean install to W7.

Right now, I'm not a #@$ happy camper. This morning my dvd drives disappeared from my system. Message from W7 says drivers are missing or corrupt. Uninstalling drivers, uninstalling hardware, and rebooting makes no #$@% difference. Drivers fail to install. Grrrrrrr!
Everything had been working peachy-keen with XP, but was I satisfied? Noooo! Many moons ago, I used to tell my analysands that the best is oft the enemy of the good. I should have listened to myself. Grrrrrrr!
Fuck, maybe I'll go back to XP. No issues. It just worked.

install a new operating system the day it is released.
If you wait until january (not the first one, the next) you will be able
to buy it for $50 and most of the bugs will have been fixed by service pack 1.
Is this a laptop. If so a lot of laptops these days ship with no system disks so that you can install drivers that system needs for computer to work when you do a new operating system install.
I think the easiest installs are on desktop computers where you have the motherboard system disk available so that you can install all the drivers when the O/S is installed.

However, on the plus side, I have a couple other desktops with which to surf and and play around and I never put any 'can't lose' data on the W7 machine. That stuff is all backed up on other machines, on external hard drives that were never touched, and with online storage.jwm

I worked with computer software since 1965 so I am probably the most cynical
person about software you can find.
This is one thing that I'm surprised more Windows users aren't giving MS shit about.
I use my desktop for budgeting, personal finances, day trading, etc. I have a lot of personal data in a lot of programs that I have configured to work exactly how I like it.
To have to spend time to back everything up, wipe everything, install Windows, update Windows, install my programs, update those programs, restore my data and re-configure is bush league.
I don't know if there's a way to send feedback to MS but if I was a Windows user, that would be number one on my list of annoyances.
