Anchor Bar is for the tourists. The wings are not worth the effort for me to head there. Just a few miles outside of Buffalo (near the Buffalo Airport) is a place called OTTO's. http://ottosrestaurantandbar.com/ It is here you can get a great sampling of what Buffalo has to offer. From pizza and wings to a Fish Fry that will knock your socks off. They also have an great Eggplant Parm as well as Fettuccine Alfredo. Nice friendly place with great food and reasonable prices.
Ok, this is fucking wierd.

I was down in Beau Fleuve (Buffalo's real name) again last week visiting my friend. Last time I was there ( a month ago) based on your recommendation, I took her to Salvatore's which was good, but not great. Food was pretty traditional Italian - really liked the Brushetta bread. The portions were fucking MASSIVE, but the restaurant was like eating in the fun house - complete with maniquins, sparkly ceilings, old cars, you name it.

This time I said to her, "you pick. You want to go back to Salvatore's we'll go back to Salvatore's."

She says, "I know a good place that's close to home and I've been going there for years."

So I say great......

Turns out - it's Otto's. I'm looking at the receipt right now. 3 Degrees of Separation.

I actually liked it just as much as Salvatore's. It's about a third of the price which makes it even better. I had the Chicken Parm. It's so fucking big, it comes on two plates. The first plate - is the chicken - swimming in sauce and cheese. The second plate was the pasta. I could barely eat half of it and I'm 6-2, and 220 pounds. (225 now after that visit to Ottos)

The food was again good, not great (but I'm afraid I'm a bit of a restaurant snob to be honest - my idea of a good restaurant is Colborne Lane, or Kaji.) It definitely didn't knock my socks off. The place is a bit of dump inside, but the service was friendly and the waitress was cute with that Western NY nasal drawl. Again, pretty traditional food, but solid.

If all the restaurants in Buffalo serve such massive portions, no wonder there are so many 300 pound Americans walking around. :p

Chicago Pizza Kitchen

Having read about this place on a few threads here, i decided to drive all the way up from downtown to try one of their pizza's out. I agree it was a pretty decent chicago deep dish pizza, but I've made better using a recipe i got off the internet! It's pricey too!

Okay, since we're on to reminicences, was it "Alfredo, Weinstien, and Ho" in Halifax which had such great seafood pizzas?

you wanted me to recommend a place that was not a tavern. So for the pretentious request I gave you a restaurant to match.

At Otto's you will notice I did not reccomend the chicken parm.

Never said I didn't like it.

Just it's wierd that I would end up at Ottos before you recommended it.

What does the menu look like at these Buffalo restaurants?

It must be just a bunch of pictures, with no wording, where fat Americans in their Sarah Palin hats just grunt and point at what they want to order.

Thanks for the recommendations.

The Anchor Bar is convenient since it's close to the HSBC Arena. Next time I cross the border I'll make a day of it and check out one of your recommendations (Irish pub).

Any good TexMex?

You will love it. The Shepard's Pie is great too.

The Best deep dish Pizza is deffinately CHICAGO PIZZA KITCHEN in Maple !! AMAZINGLY AUTHENITIC !

www.chicagopizzakitchen.ca
I would agree with this 100%.

The food and real deep dish pizza from this place is so good, it prompted me to start creating Chow Hound food reviews. Lol.

Pizza Hut cant even tie CPK's shoe laces. I never even knew what true Chicago Deep Dish was until I tried CPK in Maple. The seafood pizza with creme sauce from Pizza Roma at Dufferin and Bloor is a very close second (and I have known the owners of Pizza Roma my whole entire life since the age of 7 yrs old!), BUT NOW that I have become a regular of CPK in Maple, it's hard for me to go anywhere else when my pizza craving calls. Chicago Pizza Kitchen is easily the best pizza I have ever had.

The reason why you will never get a good Chicago style deep dish pizza in the GTA.

Chicago is near Wisconsin, Wisconsin is full of cows, Cows produce milk. Cheese is made of milk. In Wisconsin you can buy a 20 lb block of cheese for $18. In Canada, because of the dairy marketing boards, that same block of cheese will cost you $75. The pizzarias in the GTA can not afford give you a deep dish pizza with the ingreidients encased in melted cheese.

Otto's is one of our gems.
Ever hear of a place called "Grover's" in East Amherst? I saw it on the Food Network on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives". Looked like absolutely amazing burgers. Also had a cheeseburger soup.
