Ok, this is fucking wierd.Anchor Bar is for the tourists. The wings are not worth the effort for me to head there. Just a few miles outside of Buffalo (near the Buffalo Airport) is a place called OTTO's. http://ottosrestaurantandbar.com/ It is here you can get a great sampling of what Buffalo has to offer. From pizza and wings to a Fish Fry that will knock your socks off. They also have an great Eggplant Parm as well as Fettuccine Alfredo. Nice friendly place with great food and reasonable prices.
I was down in Beau Fleuve (Buffalo's real name) again last week visiting my friend. Last time I was there ( a month ago) based on your recommendation, I took her to Salvatore's which was good, but not great. Food was pretty traditional Italian - really liked the Brushetta bread. The portions were fucking MASSIVE, but the restaurant was like eating in the fun house - complete with maniquins, sparkly ceilings, old cars, you name it.
This time I said to her, "you pick. You want to go back to Salvatore's we'll go back to Salvatore's."
She says, "I know a good place that's close to home and I've been going there for years."
So I say great......
Turns out - it's Otto's. I'm looking at the receipt right now. 3 Degrees of Separation.
I actually liked it just as much as Salvatore's. It's about a third of the price which makes it even better. I had the Chicken Parm. It's so fucking big, it comes on two plates. The first plate - is the chicken - swimming in sauce and cheese. The second plate was the pasta. I could barely eat half of it and I'm 6-2, and 220 pounds. (225 now after that visit to Ottos)
The food was again good, not great (but I'm afraid I'm a bit of a restaurant snob to be honest - my idea of a good restaurant is Colborne Lane, or Kaji.) It definitely didn't knock my socks off. The place is a bit of dump inside, but the service was friendly and the waitress was cute with that Western NY nasal drawl. Again, pretty traditional food, but solid.
If all the restaurants in Buffalo serve such massive portions, no wonder there are so many 300 pound Americans walking around.
