I agree! I lived right around the corner from that place when I was a teenager and we'd go there quite often for dinner. It's a tiny, family-run place on Upper Sherman. Always seems to be busy.

The pizza is the best! The linguine with white clam sauce is also excellent!
Try the stracciatella soup as well. Yummmmmmm!

Definitely worth the drive to Hamilton!

Diana, you are the only pie that's worth the drive to Hamilton!;)

Anyone remember Frank Veteres Deep Dish Pizzas? I don't know how they went out of business but damn good for a chain.
Was thinking the same question as I was reading the first page of posts.

Gabrials in Ottawa. Nothing in Toronto comes close.
Gabriel's is not consistant in quality. For the most part, they are very good but I have had a few not so good pizzas from them.

Dante's Italian Food in Thornhill - best in my opinion, not cheap but really good eating with quality ingredients

I have to agree with the doctor about Dante's. When I worked in Markham it was a Sunday ritual to order Dante's and since I have not been in Markham I have not had Dante's. Sundays are just not the same without Dante's

I had it once in Chicago at Pizzeria Due. As I remember, real deep dish pizza has to bake for a good 45 mins. This could be one reason we don't see it here.
I agree. I had it last spring at Pizzeria Uno in downtown Chicago. The waiter explained that everything was cooked to order and had to bake for 45 minutes.

I ordered a small, rather than an individual. One slice filled me up. There were some big eaters at the table who couldn't even finish an individual.

Uno and Due are pretty much tourist traps in Chicago, but the pizza is good. The locations outside of Chicago aren't so good. I think a company just licensed the name and concept to use elsewhere.

While in Chicago I was also served 16 oz serving of veal parmesan that filled an entire oversize dinner plate. I asked the waitress if it was intended to be a shared plate, and she looked at me like I was crazy.

As for the OP's question. I think the answer might be similar to the answer I get from my Japanese friends as to where I can go to get really good Japanese food.

Japan.

Loved the Frank Vetere's location in London (Oxford. west of Wonderland) when I was still in school.

Lou Malnati's

You guys made me hungry thinking of Lou's (or Gino's or Pequod's) in Chicago. I wonder how many of those they'll let me bring through customsj?

Vesuvio's in the Junction, it wins the Star's annual contest......it's noted for its thin crust pizza though.

It's bullshit.

$26.00 for a Pickup order (large pizza - 3 toppings). It's Okay at best. Hardly great. It shows how sad the Pizza market is in Toronto, however, Toronto is not a pizza town (like Buffalo is)

We have a great restaurant scene in T.O. Probably second in North America to only NYC. Pizza just aint on the menu as defining food culture anywhere.

As to Deep Dish, I'm old enough to remember "Frank Veteer's" or however you spelled it.

You can order Lou Malnati's frozen pizza. I used to have so many requests everytime I flew anywhere I carried these on a plane (I lived in Chicago). But they also ship their frozen pizzas.

http://www.loumalnatis.com/ (Click on Order Tastes of Chicago!)

Not sure if they deliver to Toronto, but they would deliver it in a Fedex insulated compartment box.

My fav in Chicago, by far is still Gino's East (Corn crusted deep dish)
You CAN Fed-Ex from Shwartz's in Montreal by the way.

I know, I've done it.

Pizza is a regional thing

Here in Buffalo we have different pepperoni, it gets crisp as we bake it. So to me that sandwich crap they use elsewhere is awful. That said deep dish can be wonderful if is not a soupy mess in a pie shell. You need to make a pie so thick that 2 pieces will bring the biggest man to his knees.

A 16 inch pie should weight in at just over ten pounds and each layer of topping should cover the entire pie.

Anything else is just pizza hut.

No matter where you go in Toronto you just won't get a Chicago deep dish. A shame really...

Best to jump in the car for an 8hr drive to Giordano's or Pizza Uno in Chicago. Plus you can take in the sights.

Papasmerf you're must clue me in to the culinary delights of Buffalo.

I was at the hockey game friday night and, quite frankly, I'm getting tired of the Anchor Bar.

Ottawa does have decent pizza but not much else. For the nation's capital it's somewhat generic; you cant even get Calabrese bread there.

Anchor Bar is for the tourists. The wings are not worth the effort for me to head there. Just a few miles outside of Buffalo (near the Buffalo Airport) is a place called OTTO's. http://ottosrestaurantandbar.com/ It is here you can get a great sampling of what Buffalo has to offer. From pizza and wings to a Fish Fry that will knock your socks off. They also have an great Eggplant Parm as well as Fettuccine Alfredo. Nice friendly place with great food and reasonable prices.

In the downtown area nothing jumps out to me as worth the effort. Most are pretty generic as you say.

There are many other places I highly recommend such as the Irishman Pub and Eatery. http://www.irishmanpub.com/ Great food in a relaxed environment. The Corned Beef is the best around.

Mister Dee's http://www.misterdees.com/index.html Best Beef on Weck in the area and a killer fish too.

Too many more for just one post.
