What is the big deal about bike lanes? If you don't put them in, you set the city up for a lawsuit when a cyclist gets hit by a car because the city didn't show that they were accomodating the cyclists (who are also tax payers) needs. I drive and I ride a bike and I like a bike downtown because I can get around 2x as fast (by following all the rules of the road) than I can as a car. Bathurst to Sherborne along Queen West takes me 5-10 mins max.

As the WSJ article points out, deliberate decisions were made in 1987 to scare the heterosexual population because that was the way to raise money to fight AIDS.

In cases where HIV is sexually transmitted, it isn't difficult to explain why it mostly affects gay men. When it comes to sexual transmission, HIV is mostly transmitted into another person's blood stream through unprotected anal sex. That's why it mostly affects gay men (who can only have intercourse through anal sex).
Off topic but Dr Morton Shulman, once the Toronto chief coroner, got into hot water by publishing an article with the same theme - basically that the medical community was using scare tactics on the heterosexuals to raise funds when they knew that without anal sex - the odds of a male getting is remote [not impossible].

I hate both politicians - Smitherman for his slime track record and Ford for his generic simplistic 'drinking buddy' approach for less taxes, less spending, better services while harping on his colleges spending habits as he moonlights so he can draw for two full time jobs. So for those who not only are leaning his direction but have their loving tongues stuck up his ass while supporting him - I hope you are right. BTW: Doesn't he look a lot like Goldfinger from 007 ?

it's not difficult to find many cases involving a man or woman infected with aids having unprotected sex with a member of the opposite sex without revealing that they have aids and end up transmitting it. in all those cases the victim was neither gay OR a needle user
It's true that happens, but it's a small percentage. It's like saying you won't die prematurely from smoking because your friend's mother smoked 2 packs a day and lived to 100. Gay men could drastically reduce the number of HIV infections if they always used a condom but they don't.

You know what straight guys are like, horny as hell and want to fuck just about every chick out there. Now get a whole bunch of guys together with that 'fuck everything' attitude, a bunch of beers and/or misc. drugs and... Well, you get my point. The sex is high risk and they don't always wear condoms.

I know a bunch of gay guys and I'm jealous of how easy it is for them to get a BJ/laid. I'm just not wired that way.

Again a little short on the facts, bicycles are motor vehicals as described by the Highway traffic act. A bicycle/car accident should be investigated as a motor vehical accident with blame apprortioned as required. The lack of a bicycle lane would not result in a lawsuit against the city as the city is not required to provide special lanes for bicycles, they do so based on thier own requirements. I expect teh existance of bicycle lanes would cause more lawsuits because the city is now responsible for maintaining them as bicycle lanes and pavement that a car or truck would ride over with a bump would total a bicycle and rider.

The HIV aids "controversy sprang up imediatly after the disease was identified, the gay lobby did not want the stigma of a gay disease and they got their way. The bulk of the tansmition in North American is through
1) Intraveneous drug use
2) Unprotected Homosexual Sex
3) Other means

The health board had a very effective campaign going for years and the specter of death by aids brought the safe sex activities up to a much higher level. The existance of a maintenance treatment for aids has caused a reversion to unsafe sex and a rise in HIV infections.

The subsaharan african aids epidemic is almost entirly heterosexual, the disease caught a foothold with the service providers and the general refusal to use a condom has resulted in a huge problem.

Smitherman & Rob Ford both make my stomach turn. EEEWWW

While he has good intentions, Rob Ford's bombastic personality & politically-incorrect remarks will not go very well in our NICE & TOLERANT Toronto.

Smitherman has NO PLATFORM TO SPEAK OF. All he does is BLUFF & says A WHOLE LOTTA NOTHING in as many words as he can. His personal attacks on Ford and other candidates are also super-distasteful.

I am a SARAH THOMSON supporter. Gentlemen, this is one amazing woman & she deserves your serious consideration.

Self-made business woman, she used to run a multi-million dollar operation turning around failing gas stations (& making them profitable.)
Currently runs a successful niche publication in Toronto.

She may not have as big a mouth as Smitherman or Ford, but she really has our city's best intentions in mind & the business background to turn around city hall. She's proved she can do it in a 20+ year business career. She is one firecracker well-worth your consideration. If you like Ford's conservative ideas but dislike his bombastic approach, you will be in good company with Sarah Thomson.

Not to mention she's the only one of the candidates who comes from business not from years of being on the public purse.

Open your minds & consider the only worth-while of the candidates!!

Thanks gentlemen!!

Rob Ford tells it like it is.....the problem with Toronto in general and its politicians is they all are a bunch of pussies with no backbone. That's why the city is falling apart.

He's calling out all the crooks in city hall and their shady kickback deals. Love it!

And ford is grabbing two paycheques for full time jobs by doing each job part time? Wish I had an arrangement like that.

You do realize that David Miller did the same thing during his initial campaign and when he was first elected, right? Oldest campaign tactic in the books...

As for "telling it like it is" - that's a bunch of nonsense. It's telling it like he sees it without having to deal with the consequences of his lack of diplomacy. The mayor can't get things done at City Hall without the support of the council and the senior City officials; so if he burns all his bridges... he will become the least effectual and effective mayor in the history of the City at a critical juncture in its history. A bad combination.

If Rob could control himself a little, I would have some respect for him. As it is, he is no better than the NDP at the provincial and federal levels - loud and counter-everything, yet ineffectual and powerless.

He's going to be more effective than any of these bozos trying to run for mayor against him. I'm amazed some of these goofs are actually councillors.

I think you are confused. I have nothing against people who want to ride bikes,

And whats with your racist insults at me? I'm not even white... I don't have a problem with muslims or any of the other people you listed. In fact, there was someone here on these forums with a racist signature championing an israeli soldier but degrading a palestinian which I reported.
I don't hate those who are different. Different is good. But I don't want bicycles on the roads. Get over yourself and stop being so emotional and hostile.
Umm... based on your earlier post you expressed a distinct hatred against cyclists among other people:

i hate all bikers on the roads. take the sidewalk, i dont care if its illegal. just stay the fuck out of my way. bicycle's these days want cars to hit them just so they can settle a claim with insurance. go take the subway if your that poor. and i dont care about 'green' movement, get the hell out of canada and move to the UK if your so upsy daisy about the environment. or go to holland.
So based on what you've said, you're not racist, or anti-muslim. You simply wish that all the poor people, who are forced to ride bikes because they can't afford cars or transit (and who must get into accidents to collect insurance because that is their only form of income) along with "green treehuggers" should be shipped out of Canada to Holland or the UK. Wow, dude. I originally thought you were just ignorant. Now I think you're a complete asshole.

I do it myself. But stay on the sidewalk if you want to ride a bike, and I don't care if its illegal. No cop is going to hassle you for such a small thing.
Dude, I'm doing 35-40 kph riding a bike on a flat road, and 60+kph on a downhill... imagine what kind of carnage there would be if every cyclist rode on the sidewalks with people walking around at 5kph. There's a reason why it is ILLEGAL for a cyclist to ride on the sidewalk. As Landscaper mentioned, bicycles are considered motor vehicles under the highway safety act. Do you really want a cyclist doing 35k riding on the sidewalk? And, yes, a cop will give you a nice $150 fine if you are caught riding on the sidewalk.

And for the record. I'd vote for Rocco Rossi. I support his plan for bike lanes on non-arterial streets. And yeah, the Jarvis st. bike lane probably isn't the best idea, although the switching middle lane was never a great idea either. I can't count the number of times I've seen drivers driving down that lane in the wrong direction.

If he is doing two jobs part time why does he have a better attendance record at City hall than 90% of the other councilors ? As far as actually running a business outside of politics maybee thats not such a bad thing, who knew a politician that actually had a job that was not funded by public money.

Oh and by the way your excuses and complaints are getting a little weak this item has been beaten to death long before you got to it.

Glad to hear you have made a decision and can defend it in an articulate manor unlike some on this thread. I looked at Miss Thomson early on and I am actually on her FB friend list. I disagree with a couple of things first the toll road concept , not a fan my opinion ( its worth what you paid for it) but it is in reality a non starter in Toronto as the province would have to sign off and McSquinty would never do that with an election in 18 months.

Have a good day and by all means continue to contribute the change is refreshing.

“It’s right now, we can’t even deal with the 2.5 million people in the city. I think it’s more important that we take care of the people now before we start bringing in more.”

GOOOOOOO ROB!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before I though he was some loud mouth jackass who might be good at maintaining a budget. But the more I hear from him, the more he makes sense.

Here's a prediction:

Ford wins.

Ford then has a serious look at the City Hall books and has to manage the cluster of aldermen (councillors? whatev...) and realizes that campaigning is waaayyy more easy than being Mayor.

The bloom will be off the rose in 60 days.

Count on it.

I don't think he'll win but no sh*t that campaigning is waaaayyy easier than the job itself. Barack Obama can tell you that.

Toronto's finest mayors have been characters who shoot fron the "lip"......Alan Lamport and Mel Lastman come to mind immediately. Better an honest man with a business background than a leftist bull shitter who panders to labour unions, and needs props like brooms to make an impact. Any suggestions what he now can do with his broom? I have one everytime I renew my licence plates or want a plastic bag.
I like Rob Ford, warts and all!

I'm right there with cptncrunch. If ford won, he would pretty much lose any interest in the position since it involves real work. He is best suited to be the loud, obnoxious Chris Farley in the background to distract the voters from real issues that can make or break a city. He has no interest in winning, just in being a loud mouth jackass to satisfy his ego.

Oh, and just to bump it once again: "He is a wife beating drunk"
