culture counts only partly, achievement in science, technology and politics are more important. every civilization has its special culture, you can't say one is better than others, except for USA or Canada has little its own cultural identity compared to European or Chinese. Aztec had rich culture too but it acomplished very little in technology and politics. the only country with rich ancient culture and contributed scientifically, and won almost every major wars in modern history is England. Dutch would have kicked England's ass if they had equal land and population, so Netherlands gets my 2nd vote.

Yah but what have they done lately? The only time that they've had a stable government since the Ceasars was when they had a little dalliance with fascism.
The longevity of the roman empire will be good part of our history and remains a rich country.

DD, on this we agree.

china and japan may have dance to a different drum through most of their history but were able to accomplish so much during their looooooong history going back oh, 2500+ years.

I know that CM would be disappointed as much of that time was under the rules of emperors and like leaders, which of course make it wrong, bad, or whatever adjective he might choose. His ignorance reached another rung in this thread.

Oh Yeah, you cannot change history either. Many people try but it'll never happen.

Japan, China don't have much of a history other than hiroshima, communism and Germany isn't bragging their World Wars either.
The history what we learned in the school had been changed many times. You never know what happened there, because you were not there. The history wrote by the winners! Example: Katyn Massacre or Invasion of Iraq, Bombing of Dresden or a million other things.
Just because you read in the history books what happened in the past, it doesn't mean it's really happened.

Japan and China don't have history? When I read that, I beleive you arrived from an other planet.
( I'm understand your problem, and please forget my critical comment, if you are George Bush jr. ) :)

We talked about history not religion. If you read old history books and after new ones, you'll be really surprised how the numbers and "facts" had been changed.
I learned history in an ex communist country where my father lived and after I learned a different history an other country where my mother lived. The history write by historians. And as we know they never lied.

Wha ? Lots of facts have changed in the past hundreds of years? Where ? in your sleep. Then a thousand years down the road we'll twist and turn things and state that the holocaust and black slavery never happened.
How about the crucifixion of Christ? Did that happened ?

I didn't talk about holocaust what was horrible but there is a good example:
The proof is the Auschwitz memory stone which they revised in 1995 from 4.5 down to 1.5 million.
How you call that? The numbers are changed? Yes! The 4.5 million was bulletproof in 1950 but not in 1995.Why?
Slavery:
The slavery was most common in Africa. The white conqueror just learned how this thing is working from the african tribals.

Very true.

Africans still engage in slavery to this very day.

Slavery was invented in Africa, and the Africans were actually the ones who ran the wholesale slave trade in Africa supplying the southern US States.

Nonsense

All people came out of Africa, so you may be correct that slavery as well as language and the use of tools, not to mention prostitution, was invented in Africa.

However, slavery was used in all ancient civilizations, including european.

Have to say wrong to both.

Slavery has been common in every culture going back to the start of civilization.

The (white) roman empire was only able to exist because of slavery with something like a third of all people in Italy being slaves during the imperial era and the people of every place they conquered (including Africa) adding to the pool of 'resources'.

On the original topic:

Despite my interest in history, I would have to say that I can only be proud of what my country is doing now. I have no control of what happened in the past so I find it a bit stupid to be proud (or ashamed) of that. I also have no say in what happens in other places so while I can understand the pride that their people have about their current accomplishments, it doesn't affect me.

I suggest the older countries which are mostly European. What kind of history can young countries like Canada, USA or Mexico have ? What kind of voting list is this ?

Greece, England, France, Spain and Italy by far. Most of our studies in University and College have historical and educational references to these 5 countries mentioned. North America was made from them all and very proud.

Oh Yeah, you cannot change history either. Many people try but it'll never happen.

Japan and China have a very long history dating back a few thousand years.
Just because you didn't read about it in university or college does not mean that they didn't have history.
Unfortunately universities and colleges in Canada do not cover much of Japanese empire or the Chinese empire.
Here is a history or China and Japan
