Enter the 'flip-flop' - me. When someone first asked what fans would do in the wake of a lockout, I was one who said I'd come back the minute it resumed. After having more time to think some things over, I am no longer sure.
A stance like MrBruce makes more sense the closer we get to what would have been opening day.
Here is what is making me change my mind:
The owners/NHL have spoken and the Players have spoken. In the end, both leave me feeling like I've heard a political campaign and wish I had a third option. Both sides battle over Millions of dollars, which in the end, is not theirs. Its comes from the fans filling seats, and buying merchandise. Without us, they are not so privileged.
But what really gets me is when both sides say 'this hurts fans the most'. That's not true. I'm not hurt, and I wonder if any of you members here truly 'hurt'. I'll tell you who does hurt though as a result of these two sides, it's the workers and people who are involved in and around hockey.
That could be:
Sports announcers, Maintenance people at arenas, People who work at food concessions, Parking attendants, local bars, clothing stores, equipment sales... you get the idea. I can't imagine the hundreds maybe thousand out of work and laid off through a trickle effect. How many also only make min wage and badly need work?
The players and owners live a privileged life few will know. Vacation properties, investments, multiple cars, and private schooling. Both sides have no regard for the layoffs they will force on others. I read the Sens just laid off 170 staff. Does anyone in the NHL wish to say sorry to those families?
Times are tough, you'd never know it though to be an NHL owner or player.
If the start of the season comes and goes with no hockey, I might just take on a new pass time like reading more.
I'd like it settled during the baseball LCS. There's a game on every night. During WS is when we'll have nights with no games. At that point I could watch some hockey.I fear we're looking at least January before this gets settled.

I feel with a new guy heading the players this might cancel this season totally .I fear we're looking at least January before this gets settled.
I'm pretty sure they aren't allowed. Other than entry-level players, they all have one-way contracts, meaning they can't be sent down to the AHL. Either way, the AHL would not offer nearly as much as the KHL for NHL-caliber hockey players, it all comes down to the almighty dollarQuestion . Why don't NHL players sign AHL contracts instead of going to Europe ?
What does contracts have to do with anything ? The players going to the KHL have NHL contracts and the KHL is like the AHL ie they are both leagues . What is the difference of Nash going to play for the Marlies other then going to the Swiss league ?I'm pretty sure they aren't allowed. I would never watch an NBA game.
No NFL on Tues, Wed, Fri and Sat (except the last 2 weeks). I think Thurs are hit and miss. No baseball from end of Oct until April.
My sofa is gonna feel lonely.
Well there is still US college football and basketball. Best sporting event I attended was a football game in South Bend years ago USC and the Irish. Have never felt the same intensity in an arene before or since and that year ND was pretty mediocre. NCAA football Thur. FrI and Sat.I would never watch an NBA game.

The AHL is the affiliate league of the NHL, I'm sure there's some kind of rule against it, hence why only players with 2 way contracts are playing. Either way, I don't think players would want to play in the AHL. A guy like Nash is like 28 years old, a proven superstar, why would he want to go and play against 20 year old prospects? In the KHL theres tons of NHL caliber players, its like a 2nd tier NHL. And again, I stress it so much, the KHL will give them more money. And if this lockout is any indication, money is pretty important to the greedy bastardsWhat does contracts have to do with anything ? I am not arguing I am just curious as to what is the difference

They can't sign contracts with the AHL, as this is the farm system for the NHL, so these teams are affiliated to NHL teams. Every player down there has some sort of contract with either the AHL team or a two way contract with the NHL team as well. The last thing these guys want is a two way contract, if they get sent down they want to be making the NHL money, like Wade Redden, not an AHL salary. They go to Europe because there is less chance of getting gooned by someone that wants to take their job here. All NHL players with two way contracts have been sent down to the minors as of Sunday morning. What does contracts have to do with anything ? Well to be clear, I think it is Weeks 15 and 16 when they spread out gamesI would never watch an NBA game.

I will return.Well there is still US college football and basketball. Best sporting event I attended was a football game in South Bend years ago USC and the Irish. Have never felt the same intensity in an arene before or since and that year ND was pretty mediocre. NCAA football Thur. FrI and Sat.
I don't think there is a shortage of quality sports to watch. I can find enough that I doubt if I will miss it.
THe league and players have to worry about the fans in the small american markets. If the season is delayed any significant length of time thay could lose what little fan base they have established. Mosy of the Canadian fans will be pissed off but will return. Its in our DNA.
Yes. One of my friends blurted out that he will never watch NHL hockey again, but when I asked when he would sell his half of his Leafs season tickets he did not answer. lolLockouts suck, there's a lot of greed on both sides, it's the billionaire owners vs. the millionaire players. Everyone knows the owners can hold out a lot longer and will always win in the end. The players make millions, but they're all new money, they might spend it all, not invest properly, and so on, whereas the owners are old money, they haven't made their billions by buying a team, they ran a succcessful business before which made them enough money to be able to buy these teams.
One thing we should avoid as fans are the idle threats of, "I'm never going to watch hockey again after witnessing the greed of these players and owners." First of all, even if the entire season gets wiped out again the fans will come back stronger than ever, just as they did after the last lockout. Why? Because by boycotting hockey, basketball, baseball or any other sports, we're not punishing the players or owners, we're really just punishing ourselves. We watch these games for entertainment, for fun, for pleasure, that's why we've always returned in the past and will always return in the future.
The fact MLB is about to sign record high TV contracts with two separate networks kinda blows a big hole in your argument.I think baseball lost many fans,
