Have a GMC HD with Duramax 6.6 liter. 400HP with 765 foot pounds of torque. Quiet for a diesel. Exhaust brake is great as hardly use the foot brake anymore.

It does use DEF ...Diesel Exhaust Fluid. I fill tank about 3 times a year. Transmission is the same as they put in Tanks. Heavy truck at almost 4 tons. Very fast and quick acceleration that will pull away from almost anything on the road.

Never had any problems with anything in truck. Should be good for half a million miles.

Only neg is fuel filter is very hard to change. One has to remove the entire inner wheel well to get to the filter to change. No other way around it.
If you are gonna keep it a long time, surely you can get a remote filter setup...

I just get the justification of $10,000 premium for the diesel. Can't you buy a couple of rebuilds for that price?

I guess I'm like my mom that way. I like brand new.

if the truck has the DEF emissions shit on it there is a lot of shit you got to know about it. the DEF tank is heated when the vehicle is running but when you shut it off and it cools down the fluid can freeze below -5. also you can just dump water in the tank, seen it done.

Thanks, I will do my homework indeed before dropping this chunk of change on a new rig. That being said, I can always drop a supercharger on the 'Yota, but TRD stopped warranting them. Wouldn't solve my towing issue either. Another question, what is your (everyone) ideal setup for a truck. Make, model, trim package, etc. I appreciate the responses.

For me, I'm thinking, Ford F-250 (not sure I need the 350), extended cab, 8ft. box, diesel, 6 speed, 4x4. Not sure on the trim package yet, I'll have to go to the dealership and compare. Six speed manual because you can't break them with normal use. Not worried about city driving or parking, got other vehicles to go to the city. Only thing is, traffic would suck.

How much do you need to tow? Unless you are one of the horsy set.. the I can see a 5.7l Ram which can tow over 10000 lbs..
The Tundra pretty much pulls that but I live in an area with lots of hills and a half ton just can't tow with the ease of a 3/4 or full ton. Now I've pulled plenty of stuff with my 'Yota. It's a great truck. Said that a million times to a million people. I want the new truck to pull skid-steers and similar equipment. Also to plow my home and business driveways during the winter. Stuff like this will pretty much kill any half ton.

For what its worth we run a fleet that includes both GM and Ford. Very familiar with cummins. Great engines but too many issues with Dodge. Both Ford and GM diesels perform well, Ford has better price point.
3 new F550s with DEF system are working very well. if you need a 3/4 ton really no need for diesel. Our next two will be gasoline. Diesel is no longer much cheaper if cheaper at all. Extra cost not necessary as they do not perform any better. They will last longer but most will turn them over in 4 or 5 years. Oh yeah, gasoline beats diesel in colder climates.

i got the '98 ram1500 with the 318. short box, regular cab. it's a little powerhouse of a truck. i don't care about going being able to haul with it, i just want it to go fast and i love the way it looks. thinking about putting a flat black paint job on it this summer. gonna sink about 1200$ into when i get home it has a few things that need to be fixed but other than that she is my baby and i love her.

Nice. Maintenance is key if you want your ride last.

i got it for a very cheap price with low mileage (for that engine). 318 is bullet proof. best thing about dodge is big engines in small vehicles.

I like the longevity of the diesels and the torque you get for pulling uphill. I mean, what was the Duramax rated? 400hp and 725lbs/ft of torque! And the Cummins, I think, is even more powerful. Probably gonna keep it a while. And I'll have to plug it in during the winter.

I understand, pretty much all I drive when I head overseas or up north, especially enjoy Landrovers.
Very capable off road. With the proper set up, basically unstoppable (within reason). Not sure if they're making diesels anymore, maybe just not in NA.
