I have a personality where I work at something until I become competent and then lose interest (have gotten what I wanted from it) - makes it a bit awkward when I look like I have pursued many different things, but I work for myself and present the relevant information when applying for a contract - graduated in Engineering, now doing Project Management, Corporate Training and run my own business - mostly admin, accounting, hiring and marketing....couldn't be happier as I get the variety I enjoy with different tasks, not the same thing every day.

Have had a steady 3 day a week contract with Benefits for the last 4 years, so alleviates lots of the issues/costs with running your own business (ie health and dental plan). - but Definitely not doing what I studied at University!

never went past grade ten

learn from forums like terb and from documentaries

learn very little from blue collar associates

they just like to crack jokes and gab, gab, gab

never having gone to school past grade ten is no biggy as this column points out

people do something different than what they are educated for

the vast majority of what you learn you forget and it is never used even in conversation

arts degrees are especialy bad idea with no job in sight and 50 grand in the hole and four years behind in the working curve

So you basically are parroting what MSOG tried to push in his idiot thread. Unfortunately the facts prove you wrong, but hey.

college degree a waste of money?

Noticed you didn`t say much in that thread.

In this day and age, not having high school give you less than a 1 chance in 10 of getting work, let alone a career. The `doing something different` often is the result of getting the chance of using transferable skills.

sounds like a good thread but i missed it

about high school you are correct in the sense to get into trades you need your diploma so they should drop all requirements that are not needed for the trade

it seems to me if you can read and write english and do basic math then you should be eligible for any trade

it depends on the quality of education and what you were educated in

but a lot of it is a waste of time and money

same with all education

you forget what you learned and never use it

the proof for this is seen on are you smarter than a fifth grader

i asked an engineer if he ever uses all that math he learned and he said no so why learn it ?

I studied Marine Biology, but realized around 3rd year that to work in the field, I'd need at least a Masters and probably a Doctorate... I had neither the brains, the money, or the inclination to do that.

I ended up owning a marketing company, and a small publishing house but have always spent a ton of time diving, as a hobby, and as a dive instructor. Now that I am semi-retired, I am picking up contract work as an underwater photographer, which is in part due to my knowledge of "things aquatic". These contracts don't pay shit, but I get some cool free trips! By best "client" is a branch of the United Nations which is involved in various international studies of coral reefs and the like. I'm off to Central America in June for two weeks to shoot some stuff for a magazine...

It's kinda sweet "work" really...

I hope you know that all these 'neat' videos you are offering are from the US. Let's just agree that there are some really dumb people in the US.

Setting aside that the top countries in the world in any number of indexes are also the highest educated.

i can find no equivalent canadian videos

all the info in these videos pertains to canada IMHO

the only video i question is the carlin one but even his has some thinking points

my main point is full school vouchers for all

it is wrong that the government takes all your monies to build their concept of what education should be then, for example, force gays into an environment that destroys them

you cannot only not (realistically) sue the government for such crass incompetence you cannot even get your own monies back to go to an alternative school in order to stop the abuse as it occurs

this situation is nuts

Considering that ~25% of the US population think Obama is a muslim, and ~50% believe in Divine Creation, what makes you think they are smart enough to make the right choices in an education system.

you have just stated the most valid criticism against school vouchers IMHO which is incompetent parents sending their children to the church of scientology or a capitalistic pig everyone gets honours rip off school or an islamic terrorist school etc

these types of schools should be banned IMHO so some type government controls are needed

however, with freedom comes responsibility and if some parents cannot handle such responsibilities so be it

do not take away the freedoms of those who are responsible

it is not good for the individual or society

what i propose is full school vouchers for all and the public schools can compete for those vouchers against the private corporations and the home schoolers then gays can go to a gayfriendly school, the bright go to a bright kids school etc

what we have now is an unequal educational system where only the rich can opt out of public schools

You are kind of funny.

You want to ban certain types of schools you don't like, but then say don't take away the freedoms of responsible people.

I guess by "responsible people" you mean people who agree with you. They can't be religious or capitalist...

So I guess you and your friends will sit on a committee to decide who is smart or responsible enough (more properly "who is enough like me") to have educational freedom and those who are not. Not much of an ego on you.

What we have now is a public education system, that raises up the lowest level of education to a certain acceptable minimum, and offers opportunities for others to excel based on various criteria. It is really not so bad.

And it is not just the "rich" who can opt out of public schools. I know families where the parents work two or three jobs and make sacrifices for their children to get into a private school. I am glad they have that choice.
