I follow news in Toronto closely. But most of the recent increase in sidewalk crime is being ignored in most news outlets. I will stay in the suburbs this next trip and give strong consideration to cancelling future trips here this summer. This crime wave is for real. Even quiet Yorkville is showing a knife crime and a "person gone berserk". What the hell is going on? I remember when people partied until 3 in the morning with live music at Meyer's Deli.

Just put in any intersection in the downtown area into spotcrime.com and you will be shocked.

North York Yonge St from Sheppard to Finch also shows significant sidewalk robberies and assaults.

Be careful.

In that case, why leave your house at all?

Crime happens everywhere. Your concerns are severely inflated. Maybe in Detroit or south side Chicago after 7pm but not in YORKVILLE.

If you're not from here, I wouldn't rely on stats and simply ask the people who actually live here. People still party till 3am and are out on the streets no problem.

I was out all day yesterday in downtown Toronto from King St W, to Cumberland until just after midnight, I was not assaulted by anyone carrying a knife and didn't run into anyone going berserk. I will be out again in Yorkville tonight and can't see anything happening.
The GTA is one of the safest cities on the planet when it comes to crime. There are many cities on the planet that are so unsafe that you have to lock your car doors when driving and Toronto is not one of them.

BTW that website you quoted is not a legit site, you must of forgot to read the fine print at the bottom of the page.

Yorkville is no stranger to incidence involving the mentally ill. Toronto has many people in treatment programs who may find themselves wandering on the street almost anywhere in the downtown core, yet the city functions remarkably smoothly and safely.

I wouldn't even throw Detroit in the mix. Went there last year to see SOS band at Chene Park one summer evening. Walked from our hotel, no trouble at all. This dude is a suburban pinot drinking scardy cat. Do us a favour and stay off our roads, you can't drive either!

Good idea, as everyone knows Yorkville has 5-10 daytime stabbings and even more in the evening.

I wanted to go to the Caplansky's in Yorkville for a yummy smoked meat sandwich, but I couldn't climb over the piles of corpses with knife holes.

Excellent post. I think the best thing for you is to certainly stay in the suburbs. That way I won't be tripping over you downtown. Be careful, the suburbs also have grow ops run by scary people in the shadows.

Defiantly don't come downtown. It might mean a open parking spot for me

There have been a number of high (maybe low as well) profile murders and attempted murders in Yorkville over the years. Erin Gikmour, Lisa Poslums, "Just Deserts" shooting, etc.

Statistically speaking, places like Saskatoon and the like are the most violent cities in Canada.

Toronto is way down the list.

Yorkville was a great place to hang out in the middle to late 60's. Didn't seem to be any crimes being committed in those days.

I used to live at yonge and college in the 80's. Recently I walked up Yonge at around midnite and noted that it is a lot sketchier than it used to be. It is less crowded now but a higher percentage of the crowd is riff raff.

You think Toronto is bad? Stay away from London (The one in England). For some reason, it's a hotbed of regicide.
