Minneapolis Votes To Disband Police Department

City Council President Lisa Bender, along with a majority of council members that cannot be vetoed by Mayor Jacob Frey, announced a plan to “end our city’s toxic relationship with the Minneapolis Police Department."

“We’re here because we hear you. We are here today because George Floyd was killed by the Minneapolis Police,” Bender declared.“In Minneapolis and in cities across the United States it is clear that our existing system of policing and public safety is not keeping our communities safe.”

“Our efforts at incremental reform have failed. Period,” she added.

Bender said that the council would start a conversation with the community about what the new “community-led” public safety program will entail.

The police department had already lost much of its support from the community, with key partners including Minneapolis Public Schools, the University of Minnesota and Minneapolis Parks and Recreation severing ties

I hope every officer in Minneapolis walks off the job tomorrow in protest.

I think all police officers across Canada should be put on a 6 month paid leave of absence and then we’ll see what happens.

People will only hate the police until they need them.

I voted no.

However WRT police forces throughout the U.S. there is going to be major fall out. No surprise, morale is at rock bottom in the major cities.

You can't take a brush and paint a wide swath against all 800,000 LEO's as violent racist murderers based on the unacceptable actions of the few and expect the rank and file to accept it. Yes even one is too many, so you work hard and diligently focus on weeding out those individuals, not castigating the whole.

I predict there could be more mass resignations from tactical teams such as Buffalo PD did, en masse walk outs & sick leaves etc. A case of... let anarchy and chaos reign, give the people a little taste of what they want.

Expect a major uptick in crime, for the balance of the year at least. Violent criminals are rubbing their hands with glee just like they already do in Toronto. They outright laugh at cops here.

I think they should establish a new policing model, form a new dept in one jurisdiction, then gradually move it over. All police will have to go through a rehiring/screening process. Only those with a clean record can apply and only about 50% of the cops make it over..none of the leadership.

RCMP should DEFINITELY be disbanded. They are beyond saving.

Sorry to say but disbanding the police is just fucking stupid.

Retraining? Yes. For example pilots are trained to speak up to the captain if something is out of whack. They learned this after a number of plane crashes.

Although, many police agencies quite good and I'll argue you have a very good one here in the gta. Metropolitan police in UK quite good too. The lunk head departments who think you gotta kick ass are the worst. Those that engage in smart policing much better. But we can all be better professionals

It's about time. Police Departments are one of the biggest tax scams going.

More detail is needed, but it's the right step. American Police Departments are way too corrupt.

Your comment about the RCMP was done without much thought.
The RCMP,and the OPP is the police force of many, many small communities and some large cities aswell. They also have a presence at major Canadian airports.
Who would replace them?
