Is there a way to do a background check on someone? I want to know if they were involved in criminal activity or anything like that in their past?

Private Investigator is a pretty solid option. It's costly, but if it's worth it to you, then I would look in your area.
Outside of that, all you can do is your typical research online.

I know that you can go to a police station and order a criminal record check on yourself for the purpose of certain types of job applications, but can you order one for someone else without their knowledge/permission?
