It would seem this axiom would be common sense in any era.

Its because when people hear or read accusations about someone they dont like (in this case Trump), all common sense and objectivity goes out the window

Make a specific standard that isn't likely to happen in time and that can be shifted as long as required.
("Not that specific crime", "Doesn't count until indicted", "Doesn't count until convicted", etc. etc.)
The ironic thing there, of course, is that Trump has made that a very plausible thing.
Destroying the credibility of the DOJ means anything vouched for only by the DOJ will be suspect.
Yes, there are ways around that, you can do a lot of work to reinforce the credibility of what is released, but he made sure to take away any benefit of the doubt he might have started with.
