Your best bet is to nuke the filesystem (by overwriting several times with your disk sanitizer of choice) and doing a fresh install. This is the only way to make sure you don't miss anything. No way of recovering any data unless she gets the CIA spooks involved.

My pleasure. You may want to, from time to time, backup your home directory. All your important info lives here and if you ever need to wipe your drive for any reason, restoring this data will make everything right as rain :D

For future reference, if you want to check your filesystem the command is fsck. Just make sure your filesystem is unmounted before you do it. It doesnt' matter what distro you are using. Some commands are universal.

You may want to think twice about using any sort of stick on labels. It will cause the disc to become unbalanced and if the disc is damaged it may shatter inside the drive.
