Ya. So what.

If cops accept the excuse "sorry, it was a mistake" from you, then they'd have to accept the same excuse from everybody else. And then nobody would ever get a ticket. And so nobody would bother following the rules.
and you don't think this goes on everyday?
you don't think they give people a break?
and if they did you think chaos would prevale?

Expired for 6 months...? I bet they don't give too many people a break for that. A couple of days maybe...

Be happy you got caught now. If you let it lapse a year (I believe) you have to go through the retest process.

Did you check you records to see if you got a reminder notice?

I have thought it out as much as I can, no memory of the reminder, no paper work to be found......

Three years before you have to retest. After one year you have to do a vision test.

Unlike most of you I have sympathy for this guy. Our driver's license expires every 5 years in Ontario. Be honest, how many of us know when ours expires. For one the expiry date is put on the back so its not plain and visible when we pull our license out. If the Ministry forgot to send the notice (sorry dude if they sent the notice to a different address that is your responsibility to update when you move) then I think the guy has a valid point here. A $300+ fine driving with an expired license is ridiculous. I got caught not having an up to date insurance tag and was fined $60 but had that reduced to zero in court. Hopefully you will have the same fortune.
I agree.

I think the cop should have given him a break. Are they that hungry to meet a quota? The police should take into consideration the dynamics of the situation - If he ran a stop sign, in a school zone, when classes were being let out then nail him...On off hours if they are trolling for a cheap hit...

Time after time I read on this board about guys bitching about cops busting massage parlour's or strip joints - The argument being they should focus on serious crimes...Same situation here folks.

Bottom line - This guy was fucked over technicalities and if anyone of us were in his shoes we would feel the same way he does.

Could've been in your shoes but worst as sticker also expired with citizenship but no passport. If I didn't get the temp lic & sticker in time could've been stopped by OPP & troopers from 3 states.

Apparently failing to stop @ Stop signs is almost a non-event according to NY state law.

I feel bad for you that you got dinged $435. That sucks.

My point wasn't meant to be unsympathetic, I was only looking on the bright side.

If you got into an accident while driving without a valid drivers license, your insurance would be void. If you were in a accident where someone was killed (even if it wasn't your fault), trust me when I say, you'll consider $435 a bargain.

It sucks, yes, but it could have been a lot worse.

It isn't up for the cops to decide if he has a valid excuse that it what the courts are for. The reason the cops were working the intersection is that someone complained that too many people weren't stopping at the stop sign.

If the Ministry really didn't send out a notice or Canada Post lost it, maybe he has a case and the court might smile on him.

As for the whining... I guess it is a matter of perception. Personally if I get caught doing something stupid I would rather just deal with it then air it out on a escort review boards. Hey but everyone is different... :D
