I think I'm falling down the 60's soul music rabbit hole 😁

Woke up to the terrible news of Trugoy the Dove aka Plug Two aka David Jolicoeur's passing yesterday at the age of 54. He was 1/3 of the hip hop group De La Soul. Listened to them so much growing up its part of the soundtrack of my youth. This one hurts. In honor of Dave's passing a trio of my favorite De La tracks

Keepin the Faith (remix)
Trugoy's got the 1st verse starting at about 1:35

Ego Trippin (Part Two)
1st & 3rd verses are Trugoy

Potholes in my Lawn
This was the first record I bought from them back in 1989. It made me a Da La Fan for life

The two main samples to Potholes in my Lawn. Prince Paul a genius on the production

Magic Mountain - War feat. Eric Bourdon

Synthetic Substitution - Melvin Bliss (the piano kicks in at 0:06)

Many singers honed their voices in the church choir before going onto greatness. The Hutchinson sisters (aka The Emotions) come to mind .

I love the elements of this song. The guitar right off the bat (see sampled song below) and the drums. Oh the drums. Ahead of its time.

'Love Saw It' by Karyn White feat. Babyface. Written and produced by Babyface and L.A. Reid. From her debut album which I've been listening to this morning, its a gem.

This song came thru my feed yesterday. I'm blown away it sounds like it came out of the late 80's/early 90's but was released last year. I'm likin' it.

Freddie had a great voice, so did Melba. R&B duets were so big in the 80's.

Gerald Levert wow. Almost as big a voice as his father. Sadly he left us far too soon. This was produced by David Foster, you can tell.

Here's one from a ridiculously underrated vocalist, Keith Washington. He reminds me a bit of Luther Vandross in his cadence.

The first time I ever heard Keith Washington sing was on the Boomerang soundtrack which is amazing btw. The movie is pretty good too starring Eddie Murphy, Robin Givens and Halle Berry.

As I've said many times before After 7 is my ATF r&b group. This song right here appeared on the Beverly Hills 90210 soundtrack. It was produced by Keith Andes, who was a protégé of Babyface. We follow each other on twitter which is amazing.

No song is ever perfection but this one is a contender. Why I don't post more Anita on here is puzzling. An epic r&b/soul artist.

Heatwave's 'The Star of a Story'. Written by the one and only Rod Temperton who was the band's keyboardist. Rod infamously wrote Michael Jackson's 'Off the Wall', 'Rock With You' and 'Thriller'. He also wrote several hit songs for artists Brothers Johnson (Stomp!), George Benson (Give Me the Night), Patti Austin & James Ingram (Baby Come To Me), Kool & the Gang (Ladies Night) and of course most of Heatwave's hit songs (Always and Forever, The Groove Line & Boogie Nights)

Rod also wrote and produced this lovely gem for singer Mica Paris in 1993

Canadian singer Tamia covered this song on her self title debut album a few years later. This version was produced by Quincy Jones.

The band Toto was created after session musicians Jeff Porcaro (drums), David Hungate (bass) and David Paich (keyboardist) met to play on Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees in 1976. They formed a group in 1977 by adding Steve Lukather (guitar/vocals) and vocalist Bobby Kimball and went on to immediate success releasing their self titled debut album the next year. This was track 3 on that album. Of course this is a different version extended and jazzed up a bit by DiscoCat. And he rightly gives credit to Cheryl Lynn for providing background vocals.
