Rocky Roberts was making too much money in Italy to return to America. Spaghetti Western starring Franco Nero...Quentin Tarantino brought him back for Django Unchained.

Why live in Birmingham Alabama when you can live in Rome.

Solomon Burke one of the overlooked pioneers of R&B/soul. Had that gritty sound like you would hear in a sermon. Interesting back story. Fathered 21 kids and had over 90 grandkids at the time of his death. He died on a flight from Washington D.C. to Amsterdam where he was set to perform. Doctors warned him against flying due to his poor health but he ignored them. He was 70 at the time and weighed about 350 lbs.
I'm fond of this tune and really like the backup singers contribution as well as Soloman's gritty vocals.

Larry Graham was the prominent bass guitarist for Sly & the Family Stone. He left the group and formed his own in 1973 called Graham Central Station. Very similar sound to Sly & the Family Stone. They also incorporated the horn section from Tower of Power into many of their songs. This one here is called "The Jam". Its a cool concept song because each of the instrumentalists gets some vocal time introducing themselves. The drum break from 5:10 to 5:25 has been sampled numerous times in hip hop. an impressive video...with "historic" interludes
Great video. Sam Moore was something else!

Also love the Kustom amp in portions of the video on the right side of the stage, covered in Naugahyde. Lots of R&B bands used those amps back in the day..

From the Kustom amps web site:

"In the mid 1960s, a young, small-town entrepreneur named Bud Ross battled the odds to combine America's love of music with its passion for high speed hot rods. Imagining the future wrapped in sparkling car upholstery, Ross experimented with covering speaker cabinets with the same colorful Naugahyde® material. Musicians responded with an enthusiastic "outta sight!" and an icon of the modern music industry was born."

My girlfriend tells me i like , what she refers to as "problem" songs.........guilty as charged...we were driving around yesterday and this song came on while listening to Sirius radio,s Soultown....its a classic imo....not a big seller like The Shoop Shoop Song..its in his kiss.....but a great tune nevertheless ..shortly before her death she sang a duet with Jerry Butler Let It Be Me.....in my fav top 50 songs for sure..........Betty had a wonderful voice exuding emotion and Soul...she died far too young...

One of my favorite west coast hip hop tunes. Hieroglyphics were a collective of Bay Area artists. Produced by A-Plus from the group Souls of Mischief. The lyrics shout out Toronto and Vancouver which was cool.
