Solomon Burke one of the overlooked pioneers of R&B/soul. Had that gritty sound like you would hear in a sermon. Interesting back story. Fathered 21 kids and had over 90 grandkids at the time of his death. He died on a flight from Washington D.C. to Amsterdam where he was set to perform. Doctors warned him against flying due to his poor health but he ignored them. He was 70 at the time and weighed about 350 lbs.
I'm fond of this tune and really like the backup singers contribution as well as Soloman's gritty vocals.

Larry Graham was the prominent bass guitarist for Sly & the Family Stone. He left the group and formed his own in 1973 called Graham Central Station. Very similar sound to Sly & the Family Stone. They also incorporated the horn section from Tower of Power into many of their songs. This one here is called "The Jam". Its a cool concept song because each of the instrumentalists gets some vocal time introducing themselves. The drum break from 5:10 to 5:25 has been sampled numerous times in hip hop. i agree Dougie....Soloman was an unsung hero.....not for every taste...but he recorded some classics

Also love the Kustom amp in portions of the video on the right side of the stage, covered in Naugahyde. Lots of R&B bands used those amps back in the day..

One of my favorite west coast hip hop tunes. Hieroglyphics were a collective of Bay Area artists. Produced by A-Plus from the group Souls of Mischief. The lyrics shout out Toronto and Vancouver which was cool.
