Maybe true, but for the wasted 1K you could have a new Timex each month and throw it away if you wanted to. BTW, a Timex will keep better time than a Rolex. Just don't go scuba diving with a Timex. They all blow their seals around 60'.
Ya, but not many pretty women come up to you and say, 'nice Timex'. It's shallow, I know, but it happens. Don't worry I'd blow my seal at 60 ft as well, so no big deal.

The warranties to these watches are all worldwide as long as you take to authorized service centre and getting past customs is really easy - you just wear the watch and mail the fancy box to yourself so that it is not in your luggage.
just so you know - there are cases in which customs opened the mail and then showed up at people's door step asking where is the item. Penalties are very heavy and interest is ticking while you are explaning yourself to CBSA (and then quite possibly to a Federal Court). Federal charges are also possible.
I am dead serious.

I recommend purchasing overseas if you are buying a high-end watch. Hong Kong is a awesome place to buy high end watches. I just got a Rolex GMT master II for a good $1500 off the best price I could get here. Our awesome exchange rate helps as does the fact that there no tax. Also you can't beat the selection in HK - downtown in the jewelery district there are dozens of stores that will put Royale de Versaille (yorkville watch boutique) to shame ... and the best thing is that you can try on anything ... even 30-50K watches and they will be happy to let you do so even if you are in shorts and a t-shirt .. no snobby attitude at all.

If you travel, it's a bonus as you can't beat duty free or some over seas pricing but you still have to know prices and spot knock off. Knock offs are getting really good. Even some jewelers are getting fooled. I've seen watch prices in Germany or Brussels Duty Free that aren't much different. You have to know going in.

I've done too much work for the government to f**k around with customs. If you got a good deal pay the 20% duty on the remainder after $700, you'll still be ahead.

.... and we watch televisions and read books. What can i say? We save time not reaching in our pockets for our cell phones or swearing when they drop in the toilet bowl. We can even use them as a compass faster than cell phones, if they have a traditional face.
Well you've got one on me. I've never dropped a cell phone in the toilet. Seriously, keeping track of time is not all that hard today. I consider wrist watches in the same category as cuff links.

There is likely no single high-end product with as much room to haggle (percentage-wise) as a watch. I love watches, but am appalled by the price/value ratio. On the lower luxury end, I've purchased a Raymond Weil that listed at 2k for as little as $500. On the high end, stonewalled a classic Patek Phillipe Calatrava down by 50% of the asking price. And here's the thing -- the movement on the Raymond Weil is nearly the equal of the Patek -- indeed is likely produced in the same factory.
In the end, the question is what the watch means to you. If you are wearing it just for others (dress to impress) - I can turn you on to a fake shop that will get the job done, and include a real swiss movement to boot. I mean, why spend 20k to do a $300 job. Or if, like my father did for me, you want to own a true work of art to pass down the generations, there are ways to get that too. To get value for money it just requires patience and persistence.

I've never dropped one in the toilet either but I know way too many people who have and I used to laugh. You obviously don't dress up much. Cuff link are just regulation with tuxedos or blue power suits. Do your ties have clips or elastics on them also.

I've have questions about Raymond Weil watches lately and don't feel as confident about the new ones. The exact same watch I bought 15 years ago is now half the price. Now it may not be the exact same inside and that doesn't really effect the price of my watch as a collectable, as it dates from 15 years ago. I lie it and it is my formal watch for dress-up occasions.

Knock-offs can be hit and miss and you have no recourse if they need repair as you're SOL. Read upon them as well on the various BB. Even the knock-offs are discussed.

No, I have some very nice silk ties and can tie them in any knot you please. Expensive wrist watches make no sense to me. You want to waste your money knock yourself out.

Weil has definitely gone more mass market, but still a good watch. Especially some of the new larger-faced series. And YES, knock-offs are hit and miss (more miss than hit). But there are "reputable" dealers who use real gold, silver and stainless, and who bring craft and care to their products. And some even use the same movements as the real thing. It requires research and a heavy dose of caveat emptor.

Well, if I were ever strapped for cash, with two exceptions, I could sell my collection and 'make a tidy profit'. Try that with silk ties or Hyundai cars.

Remember the rolex if I excepted the last offer, that would have been 3000% return in 35 years, 6x better than on my house in almost the same timeframe.

To the OP, if you choose self winding watches, which tend to be a better investment, get a watch winder. It costs in the beginning, but saves a lot along the way as the watches don't need service as much.

Yes, for sure. Even knock-offs can cost you $700 for the big fish.

A Rolex is nice as the ladies associate it with luxury. I wore mine to an incall once and the SP was checking it out on the nightstand and said "I knew from your personality/clothes you had good taste so I wanted to see what watch you wore".
Wow, she saw you coming from a mile away!

There are two things they teach all the high end female retail reps to look at on a guy...NEVER look at his shirt, pants, shades, jacket, belt, hat, hair....The only thing that you need to concentrate on a man is his shoes and/or his watch!!! My advice..you want a crazy watch for next to nothing....This sounds a bit kooky...but....if you are ever in NYC..Head down to Canal street. Ask for Benny...everyone knows him. He has the BEST knock off Panerai, IWC, Bell & Ross. All for about $70-$80. I bought a Panerai 1950 Luminor and 3 Bell & Ross watches from him. The fucking things are unreal. Walked into a jeweller wearing the Bell & Ross Phantom...I took the phantom off and handed it to the jeweller...he inspected it .....now his assistant is bringing me tea, he's pulling out other Bell & Ross watches. I dont know where he gets them from?!?!?! They are amazing!!!! Rolex, that watch is for a bonehead that doesnt know any better.

You either like Rollies or you don't. I'm the same with Omegas, meh. It was my first good watch. We all remember our first, right. Remember 3000%. I won't complain. i'm not in the IWC, Patek Philipe, or Jacger La Coultre reverso range, but I like what I buy.

Hmmmm.... Timex.... Tag.... Timex.... Tag.... NOPE.... think I'll stick with my Tag. AND I've been down to 120 feet scuba diving with it on with no problems. The alarm kinda freaked me out at depth. Didn't think it would be that loud underwater! :D

Costco sells a dual winder, bi-directional watch display case for $99. It works great with my pieces, but it is not speed-adjustable for more sensitive movements.
thanks!

If you mean the winders, I've bought them from a Calgary place, but it's now out of business thanks to the recession. There are good shops in TO. I wish i could remember the shop on University near King. There plenty of web sources but most from the states and if you don't know the manufactures history it can be hit and miss through mail order. Good ones will run you $200 for a double and $300 for a quad.
