I think that it is an embarrassment to baseball officialdom that nothing can or will be done about the umpire's calls. The replay clearly shows that the 3&1 pitch was in the other batter's box and, I suspect, the producers chose not to show the 3&2 pitch because it was so obviously high and outside.

Not that it excuses what Lawrie did, but it was not a one sided event -- which may or may not mean anything in terms of what suspension he gets.

I would have thought that the primary concern for umpires and MLB is to get the call right, yet MLB refuses to use the instant replay which would show some of the egregious mistakes the umpires make... like that call that deprived Galarraga of a perfect game in 2010.

I am not going to hold my breath waiting for MLB to apologize for the ump -- but it should! Just like Jim Joyce did! It's the "decent" thing to do!

Is it time yet for the fans to demand that MLB to get with the program?

Do you think the ump "missed" the calls or was it intentional? I honestly don't believe a major league umpire could "miss" two consecutive pitches that weren't close.
MLB baseball should be talking to the umpire and holding an investigation. Those two pitches missed by so much that a house league umpire would have got them right.

I also thought throwing the beer on the asshole was wrong. At the cost of beer at the dome you don't throw it on n incompetent ump unless you recycled it first!

I would be loathe to say it was intentional... but if it was, the guy should be fired because it is a shit poor reflection on the integrity of the game.

My opinion is he called that a strike because Lawrie is a rookie and he felt slighted when he tried to take the base on the first blown call, at best it was subconscious.

Not too long ago, a pitcher hit a rookie to put him in his place , and got suspended for it, now an Ump has done effectively the same thing, and nothing.

Brett Lawrie is not a rookie.

Lawrie was passionate, irate and vocal about the calls. He should be disciplined and fined for his actions.

The Ump was petty, calculating and abusive of his authority. He should be disciplined and fined for his actions.

There's no question the ump did it intentionally. He wasn't blowing calls up till then, so why two flagrant ones back to back. He should be suspended for the rest of the season, but the union will come running to his rescue if the league tries to discipline him. What a joke!

Stephen Brunt made a comment that rings true - not just about the Lawrie thing, but about Bautista's treatment of the umpires
and vice-versa.

His feeling is that the Jays might be playing with fire by "showing up" the umps with obvious disgust at the calls from both guys.
Do you remember the Twins series when the ump actually said Jose "didn't get out of the way" when a 90 mph+ fastball hit him?

Never seen that call in decades of watching, say, Don Baylor step in front of pitches.

The umpiring in both series (Twins and Rays) has been beyond brutal. That said, the Jays have to smarten up because the complaining
doesn't get them anywhere.
Exactly. The Jays are starting to remind me of the Pat Quinn-Roberts-Tucker-Corson-Domi Leafs and the current Canucks. Too much whining and showing up the refs. At least those Leafs and Canucks actually won something...

Even when the umpires are wrong, you can't show them up. They talk amongst themselves. Their union is too strong. They are, for better or for worse, the law. Show them up at your own team's peril.

At the end of the day, umpires make mistakes. Always have, always will. To chirp at them (Bautista constantly does this), show them up (the looks, running to first on a borderline pitch) or completely lose it like Lawrie did will result in them NEVER giving the Jays the benefit of the doubt. Ask Ernie Whitt about it - his feud with Joe Brinkman cost the Jays plenty of calls.

The umpire's call was foul tip. The announcers thought the call was didn't attempt to get out of the way. They did correct themselves after the call was corrected and they reviewed the play.

Lind to minors Gomes called up..interesting that he will be the first Brazilian player in the league :)

http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=396179
About fucking time. Lind was an automatic out. A couple of nights after he was dropped in the lineup they posted his lifetime stats in as the cleanup hitter and what struck me was the .238 batting average.

I wonder if Jays brass have any thoughts of converting either Arencibia or D'Arnaud to a first baseman?

Lose 2 to the Rays, win 2 from the Yanks. 5 and 5 road trip. Seems like the Jays are treading water.

Don't look now but in spite our collective hand wringing over hitting and bullpen etc., etc, the Jays are in the 2nd wild card position.

Almost every team has issues. The Jays are far from alone in that regard and with almost 1/4 of the season gone, and we know they can play better, they should be considered legitimate contenders.

Magic number for the division is 128.

Despite his hitting woes, Joey Bats is top 10 in homeruns, and has shown signs of regaining his hitting stroke. Jays have taken over 3rd in their division and I don't believe the Orioles will be on top come September.

I know. But they made the playoffs and conference finals. Multiple 100 point seasons...
That's not 'winning' anything.

Making the playoffs is not winning a Championship.

This is the Blue Jays thread.

Jays finally sweep an eastern division rival, even if it was a 2 game series. Nice to see Bautista coming around. He appears to nave his confidence back and he looks like he is having fun again.
Casey Jansen has had 3 consecutive saves since moving to the closer roll, hasn't allowed a runner. Nice to watch the final inning and not swear. I think they have to consider leaving him there when Santos returns. The other good thing is they don't have to rush Santos back.
Gomes 2 hits last night. Nice way to start your major league career.
Mets next, lets hope the winning continues!
