Show the scouts, coaches, trainers, et al, the money - that should bring them on board. :D

My prediction is Leafs' next GM position will go to a) JFJ if they make the playoff; b) Sundin if he decides to retire; and c) an even lesser hockey brain if neither a) or b) is available. Aman!!!

Brian Burke is a big Irish guy with a short fuse. I like him already. Why leave Anaheim though ? Because Toronto is the mecca of Hockey and he has a big ego and would make alot of money.

...because it would seal his legacy...to have brought an expansion franchise, and if he managed to bring one of the worst run sports franchises to the Cup..it would put him in a league with the great Sam Pollock in GM folklore....

I don't necessarily know if he's an asshole (he may very well treat the people around him with respect) but he's definitely opinionated, isn't a pussy about expressing them and doesn't give a shit if anybody agrees with him or not.

I'd take him for the job of turning around the Leafs without turning over a new leaf himself.

you really are a Flyers fan...

byerent said:
well, seeing how the flyers are in town to beat up on the leafs, once again, let me say that bobby clarke could be lured away from his current position....he should be on the a-list (no, not asshole list).

let's go flyers :)

...because the dickwad Clarke is one of the worst GMS in the league..he may have been a leader in his playing days, but as an executive, he really knows fuck all

...but then...dumping that idiot on someone else would really help the Flyers cause

Well I'm no Bobby Clarke fan... but haven't the stars and flyers had some success under him... compared to some other teams ...

Even still, I'm no bobby clarke fan ..

When was the last time the Leafs drafted somebody who eventually lead the team in scoring ... Clarke who usually had the same draft position as Leafs has done it with guys like Carter, Gagne and it was his drafting staff that
drafted Forsberg in the 9th spot ..

LOL.....

Thanks GR .. I knew the Bobby trivia was out there , but that search function is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy up in the right hand corner !!

Well I was avoiding a leafs comparison..... after all the leafs are a team who's 2008 highlight is a 2 game week against the flyers to determine just how much they will miss the playofs by ...
But the fans are eating it up !!

(I had to work that in somehow today)

Is he that really good of a GM , what has Vancouver done , he drafted alot of their players, out of the playoff this year, got a halve descent goalie, drafted the sundin twins to me have done nothing. Had a lucky year with the Ducks. So what is his record as a Gm??. They should go after the guy who has turned around the Penguins. Burke is just a mouth piece.

keep in mind Crosby played and got over 100pts during a season in which the Pens only got 58 pts.

there was some good work done by the present GM Ray Shero, and ASS GM Chuck Fletcher and Heinbuck and McKinnon (2 Chief Scouts) are the best tandem in the league... a league that doesn't have many teams with +1 head scout.

brian burke was the best gm the canucks ever had. guyroch pointed out how he turned the canucks around with masterful trades. it's too bad it was only the sedin twins and not the sundin twins. :)

on a related note, canucks fired their gm, dave nonis, today. missing the playoffs was not an option for a team with such high hopes. i'm assuming steve tambellini will take over.

Why did the Penquins have 58 pts ??? Cause at the time Penquins were going on the extreme
cheap in team Payroll and it was Crosby and a bunch of AHL players ..
I'm definitely not disputing the fact that they had financial troubles... they did, big time. and though, they weren't deep on the roster- they weren't all a bunch of AHLers either:

Sidney Crosby
John LecLair
Mario Lemieux
Ryan Malone
Ziggy Palffy
Mark Recchi
Maxime Talbot
Sergei Gonchar
Brooks Orpik
Rob Scuderi
Marc Andre Fleury

yeah, and a few AHLers...

but, you have to admit that alot of these players had to be 'forced out of the organization' by the new GM... Shero had balls to get rid of LecLair, Recchi and cut loose alot of AHL material (Fata, Roy, Vandenbussche, Tarnstrom, Jackman) and bring in a class of Penalty Killers which made the biggest improvement to the roster (Staal, Gill, Sydor, Eaton, Dupuis, Hossa)... Shero did have a vision and took some big risks. In fact, Shero had a bigger impact on the team than Crosby and Malkin did... let's not forget, the Penguins were always a fairly high scoring team. What improved them in standings was largely their 5on5 play, goaltending, and PK that for the most part resulted from personnel changes.

BTW-do you remember in February when Burke hinted that he'd like to return to Vancouver someday, where his wife works?

i'd be shocked if burke took the leafs' gm job over before taking the vacant canucks' gm position.

It really depends on if the situation is better for him. If he has free will to make decisions, money, contract, etc. The perks are sometimes to great to pass up. Burke is a strong individual with a good track record but not perfect of course. He has won a cup though so some credit must be given. The Vancouver ownership group is questionable and it is on Toronto as well. I think this would be a tossup. The travel time would be greatly diminished in Toronto and time is something you never get back and is the more valuable to me than anything.

Burkie has been there, done that with Vancouver. I'm betting the Leafs will be talking to him beofre the end of the month.
