He doesn't want to come back. He'll take big money somewhere else.

He wants a long term deal - 5+ years and its going to cost somewhere in the range of $85 million. He had a great season but too much to spend I think. The Yankees will probably get him.

Id have said NO before Marcum went down for the entire year next year and use the money for a big bat but now thats he;s gone for the year I would think long and hard about offering up some cash.

He only pitches well when he is up for a contract.

So everyone seems to say. But this year he has been healthy so that's another possible explanation and the one I'm sure he'd want everyone to believe.

These guys have the weight of a club house on their back everytime they hit the mound ... I find it hard to believe he turned it on now cause its a contract year ... He is guaranteed 12 million dollars for the next two years if he pitched good or pitched like crap ... He is healthy ...
Manny Ramirez could have cashed in on another $20 mil in 2009 and possibly 2010, til he tanked it. Once released from those two option years with LA, knowing he is now playing for more dough, look at the numbers he is putting up. In roughly half the number of games with LA, he is close to his HR and RBI totals with Boston.

It will probably be the Yanks or Red Sox. Hopefully they will get the real AJ and not this years' version.

Better chance of the Yanks. I can't see Boston chasing AJ, not with some good young arms coming up. They are already solid at the 1-2-3 spots in the rotation. I don't think he is worth the risk for all that money he is going to want, but some team will pay it.

...the Yankees falling for it...they need the pitching, have a habit / history of throwing away money to get it, and have plenty of dough to burn in that manner.

So how much is a guy worth who has a career ERA near 4.00, a career WHIP of 1.3, whose high water mark for wins before this season was 12, and who until this season has only had more than 30 starts, or 200 innings pitched twice in 9 seasons? Because apparently 13 million isn't enough....

Gawd, it never ceases to amaze me how stupid GMs can be at times compared to the average real fan of their sport....

That's pretty much my thoughts. I posted earlier about how Boss Junior and the Hankies are going to break the bank next season and chase down any available player who is at the top of his game or who at least was for one season. Do you think they want to move into the new stadium with a $200 million dollar team and finish 3rd-4th place again?

AJ and Doc combined to be the best starter duo in Jays history in terms of wins

Halladay 20, AJ 18

it was previously Jack Morris 21, Juan Guzman 16 back in '92

Like most athletes, he's all about the money. Remember how fast Al Leiter jumped ship after the Jays nursed him for a few years.

Bit off topic, but this shit gives me more respect for a guy like Sundin who no longer chases money. AJ has made $30 million in the last 3 years. Is there ever a point where he plays for pride and team as opposed to money?

A.J, is at best a .500 pitcher, yes he had a good year this year, but only becasuse he wants to increase his value. Lot of player are like this, when its time to renew contract they have breakout season. I think the jays should eithe sign and trade him or let him go, he is not worth it. You watch what kind of season he will have the next few years, He will be on the disabled list and he wont care, He will get what he wants and then shut it down.

Evidently the Jays have had a few talks already with A.J.'s agent and are gonna offer an extra 2 years at $15 mill. each on top of the 2@$12 mil he's already got.

I think AJ enjoys being here, with Doc, Arnsberger and the love-in from the fans his last game. He had his best year in this environment.

I'd say it's not a slam dunk he leaves. IMO there's about 20-25% chance he stays. The above offer is not necessarily the Jays' last. Nobody else can negotiate with him until 10 days after the World Series.

yeah i was just reading about that too. 15 mill isnt as bad as i heard it was gonna cost a team. here is the link to sportsnet story. Aj seems faily happy with the unofficial offer
We'll see if he's a man of substance or if it's all about the money.

Mind you, the Yankees may throw so much money at him that he almost has no choice. That's why if the Jays don't sign him before the 10 day post WS time frame, their chances go down.
