' According to Ztar’s June 3 filing to the CRTC, Rogers has repeatedly acted unfairly, pointing to several key issues: it refused to provide modern features like LTE and VoLTE, even though those same services were offered to Rogers’ own budget brand, Chatr. Ztar also says Rogers backed out of a 2021 pricing agreement and later argued that the deal wasn’t legally binding. '

There is a chance that although you might have a 4G LTE complaint phone. Rogers looks like they are not providing Ztar (aka Speakout) access to the LTE network. It is a contract disputed but as well Ztar appears to be owing Roger's money.

I agree the dispute with Rogers is likely part of the equation (not just 3G shutdown) and puts long term Speakout use in question. The latest message from Rogers says my current service will experience critical disruptions after August 31st. My phone is 4G LTE compliant. You can check if your phone will work on Rogers' 4G LTE network by going to Rogers.com and search "3G retirement" and use the compatibility tool. Searches can be done by iMei# or make and model #.

So based on this info. If your sim card is higher than 8930272040299. Then it sounds like you will get access to the 4G network. However if not, because of the contract dispute between Rogers and Speakout Wireless. At the moment speakout wireless is not selling 4G sim cards. Which is why they are pushing clients over to Lucky......

Maybe I missed in in the thread, but is there any other company that offers a pay as you go similar to 711? All I have found is monthly plans. The little I use my burner doesn't really justify a monthly fee.

None. Speakout Wireless is the only company that does pay-as-you-go with 365 days rollovers.

You can do monthly pay as you go plans with Kodoo. Pay cash with a voucher you can buy at local stores. But nothing that does minutes over 365 day plans.

Actually, to my amazement, I found a store that offers, allegedly one year for $99.00 Just text and talk. They give you a free sim card and you can keep your phone number. I believe I got that right. Will check on Monday." Mobile Klink. "

I have one of those Huawei 7-11 speak out specials that i fear passes away August 31. I would love to know if this is the solution that gives the same aspects of some anonymity and pay as you go not monthly stuff etc.

Let's hope Mobile Klink doesn't get Colonel Hogan'ed in the end.

Good to know and thanks. Unfortunately for me my sim card number is lower than that one. I guess it means my phone will go wonky at the end of the month. Maybe it's a sign to move on from all of this. Giving it some thought.

From what I gather. Once the 3G network goes offline, there is no 2G network to fall back on as that was also probably retired a while a go. If you really need to keep the phone number then consider either Freedom's $99 or $129 pay as you go plan. Or check out Koodoo $100 pay as you go.

Any updates?
Thanks for looking into this.
Here's an email from SpeakOut:

The retirement of the 3G (HSPA) network, starting August 31, 2025, will only affect customers who rely on that network. If your phone is compatible with the 4G LTE network, your service will not be interrupted, and you do not need to switch. Our partnership with Lucky Mobile and the free SIM card offer is specifically for customers whose service will be impacted by the 3G shutdown.

If you do make the switch to Lucky Mobile, you balance will be forfeit, as they are a different service provider. You can upgrade your phone to a 4G LTE compatible device to keep your account with us and your balance intact.

The question remains whether SpeakOut will be able to continue using Rogers network:

Thanks for this. So...to not lose your money it seems you need to buy another of their phones? I'm not sure my Huawei can be upgraded lol. I'll have to check their instructions on how to switch the number to the new phone. For once id love to have a teenager around - they'd know how to do this lickety-split!

It also seems if you get the free Sim you lose your money.
Oh well. More to ponder. Thanks so much for digging into this!

Well, I am going to just wait until September to see if I am still on the air. The mobile Klink said the $100 per year is for 400 calls and texts or something. for $150 you can get unlimited text and calls for a year. Same with Chatr. It seemed that topping up my speakout was easily costing that much per year, so either way I will probably switch.

I found this off the speakout forum some subscribers have been getting this email apparently: (source https://www.speakoutwireless.ca/speak/7-eleven-rates-and-plans/new-sim-needed/). I found a 7-11 and they sold me a SIM which exceeds the 3G serial but I don't get the VoLTE symbol on my phone (I checked the IMEI on rogers compatibility page and it passed).

Here's the email:

Important: SpeakOut is not going out of business — but you must choose one of these options to keep your number active. If no action is taken, your phone number will eventually be lost.
