Bill C-36 will be debated today in the house of commons at approx. 12:15 PST/3:15 EST, you can watch it live on CPAC: http://www.cpac.ca/en/
you should also have a channel on your TV for cpac.

call your MPs to urge a free vote. Many conservatives are not in favour of this bill.

I hope you attached your signature gif to your well written letter, Miss Jessica. :thumb:
Maybe he'll want you to visit and explain your position orally.

I get that not everyone has a 'happy hooker' story. I get that not everyone in the biz wants to or should remain in it. I spoke at length with someone yesterday who's a great example of that. Those are where the focus should be, those who are feeling trapped by poverty, addiction and mental health issues. Let's get them help to get out.
Have you read the internal research paper and the 2006(?) white paper on prostitution? I just skimmed it. You obviously get it. You are a subset of a larger population. The industry has far too many nuances to to generalize. They don't see that. They *think* they are doing what you say. But to them sex for sale is either forced or economically coerced (they call it "survival sex". It's a false free choice.)

It's absolutely important that you and others in your situation continue to make your story heard. But, I fear that we are talking at cross purposes. We can rant and rave all we want, but until we talk their language and see where they're coming from, nothing will change.

I just called my MP and then wrote to him:

I first would like to apologize for this short and somewhat messy email, I didn't realize until moments ago that there is a debate in the house this afternoon, and I wish I'd had time to sort through my thoughts and write them in a more clear, concise and coherent manner. I will write again when I've had a chance to sort through all that I'd like to say, (this is the just the tip of the iceberg!) so having said that, please take the time to read these few points:

I'm not sure if you're aware, but despite our constituency riding being a small and rural one, this bill affects some of your residents.

I am an independent sex worker, I've been working in the industry for six years and I am very happy. I am not exploited, abused, marginalized, trafficked, or underage. I am a mature, independent, free thinking woman, who enjoys the company of a man very much, but chooses not to maintain a conventional relationship.

I am educated formally in Legal Office Administration, and I've studies other fields since, but I've worked in many varied industries, from food & beverage service, to disaster restoration and everything in between.... and now to sex work.

I can truthfully say that I have been treated very badly by some employers and managers in many positions, more in food & beverage service than in any other. Long hours, no breaks, pretentious customers, late nights, early mornings, poor working conditions, negligent safety standards, and the kicker ... all that for minimum wage.

I've never felt LESS exploited than I do right now, as an independent sex professional.

Am I 'trapped' in sex work? Would I exit sex work if I had options? Good question. I have bills to pay, like most. I have a future to plan, like most. I have a retirement to save for, like most. Are you trapped in your job? Would you exit if you had options? Wouldn't we all just leave our job if we didn't have to stay?

Enough about me, now lets talk about my clients. The gentlemen who visit me are not perverts. They are our brothers, fathers, sons and friends. They are often so lonely, it brings a tear to my eye. They are in need of compassion, closeness, a feeling of intimacy, They aren't abusive to me, they are kind and gentle, and they are so grateful for what I am providing. It's not all about sex.

Please take these thoughts with you today as you debate on my future. Thank you for taking the time to read my email.

Please don't make myself and the men I adore criminals.

did anyone watch it? I had to run out and got back ten mins ago .. now they are on a break. What happened?
Nothing yet, they are voting to end a debate on another matter involving income splitting. Kinda looks like the NDP are just wasting time before this bill is presented.

Look at the bright side. Maybe if they talk about all this nonsense for another 8 hours, they won't get to the bill and we will have 1 more day of freedom...

Or just rubber stamp it to make an uncomfortable topic go away without talking about it any more than you have to.

...trying to think like a politician - hard to do when you more than two brain cells…
