Let's pull together for Ray...

Fred Zed said:
Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Call someone and get some help today.
I am cancelling your TERB account today. Don't come back to TERB until you get some help.
Fred,

It's clear from your banning Ray and your other posts in this thread that your intentions are good and to encourage him to get help. However, I think your reaction is an emotional one - but not a practical one. You even agreed that he can simply setup a new handle and could be potentially be right back on the board.... ???????

It would seem to me that his reasons for posting in the first place is because he was reaching out for help. What if there was someone on this board that was somehow able to help him get himself on track again? By banning him, you've simply slammed a door in his face without even giving him or anyone else here the opportunity to deal with the problem...

What makes you think that he gives a rat's ass that he cant get to visit 'your' board???

Let's just hope that your actions didnt hurt his feelings so much that he ended up becoming so sad and depressed and telling the world to go f*ck itself before throwing himself off a bridge....

My suggestion is that you apologize to him (discreetly by PM) and give him a chance... If he goes on to act foolishly and inappropriately on the board, then ban him.... (as you would with anyone else who acts foolish and inappropriate).

With all due respect Fred... it's The People that make this board what it is - not you. Let's hope that it's not too late for all of us to rally together and help a fallen brother...

I think how a person chooses to respond to the idea of addiction depends a lot on personal experience. Some of the people here who have responded rather negatively may have gone through the same experiences I did. My dad was an alcoholic and it almost destroyed my family. I went to the meetings for family members of people with AA, and I walked out of there spitting mad, when they tried to tell me my Dad had no control over what he did, that is was a disease. That said I was only about 15 or 16 at the time.

Some people have "addictive personalities". For them, even without a history of mental illness, it is much easier to become "stuck" on something than it is for the average person. This has to do with a brain miswiring between the orbital cortex and the basal ganglia, where the parts of the brain do not communicate properly, often due to a lack of serotonin (the chemical messengers of the brain). One of the medications used for depression (selected serotonin reuptake inhibitors) can often help people where the chemical imbalance is the cause for the addictive or compulsive behavoiours. I am not trying to say that this means it is an disease, I think describing it as a psychological illness would still be the most accurate.

That said, I still believe that everyone has the ability to *choose* to get help. There are plenty of places to do so. Being from Guelph, Homewood comes to mind, as they apparently have an excellent addictions program. The sad part of this is that most people will have to hit rock bottom before they are willing to actually take that final step and get the help that they need. Having been a part of TERB for quite sometime, I know this is not the first cry for help by Ray.

Personally Ray, I hope that you DO go get help this time. There are excellent programs and support systems available to help you through the rough times. Being addicted to something and getting clean is a battle, but by accomplishing it you will feel stronger, more confident and better able to deal with the world. A lot of the people here are living proof that it can be done. And a lot of people have come forth to express faith in you that you CAN do it. I can't speak from the side of having conquered an addiction, but I can speak from the side of a family member watching a person conquer addiction. Life can become its most fulfiling when you stop trying to escape it!

In the laboratory.
Fred, not us, has to live with his decisions. It's his board and we're just guests. We can just walk away from any ensuing fallout but it's his living. So, I don't think a vote is the way to go. Instead, we make our best arguments and hope that they prevail.

In this instance, I think Fred made a very bad decision but, in general, and over the years, I believe he's done a pretty good job. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been here so long.

SK,

Ray can still read postings in the lounge even banned, or suspended. Anyone without an account can read the louge, they just can't read all the naughty bits in the review section without registering.

And as far as TERB goes, it is Fred's baby, and even if we posted a poll and voted unanimously that we wanted Ray back, it wouldn't make a whole lot of difference. The final decision is ultimately his.

And in all honesty, I would vote for Fred. This person needs professional help, and I doubt anyone on this board who *is* in that field would admit they were. Going back to my experience with dealing with an addict, it took my whole family turning their back on my Dad before he would get help. I know it may sound harsh, but enabling Ray isn't going to help him, and perhaps loosing an avenue where he felt he had people he could turn to might be the thing that pushes him to get the help he needs.

I would much rather read a post by him saying, "I have been clean for 16 hours and 42 minutes" then another one about a bender he went on. Once he makes that step is the time for us to be here rallying to help him, to help him to stay clean. Then the things we say will truly being to make a difference, cause he will finally be *receptive* to hearing them.

just my humble opinion of course

I used to be in them. Coke distorts reality. Makes you feel superior to any situation. If you were not a smoker and you were doing coke, the smokers would not be so welcome.

It's weird world. It's one that is so hard to understand unless you're in it. And of course we all know you don't want to be in it. The trap is so easy to fall into. I suggest you find new friends and new circles.

As far as coke making you feel superior that's only lines and only at the beginning. Having graduated to crack and IV use after a while you don't feel superior at all rather like a paranoid little mouse. Been there done that.

Funny as hell

Bet Ray never expected his threat to fly so high all of a sudden. I still stand by what I said at the beginning. Ray is the weakest link if he can't control himself. Anyone who can't control themselves in my opinion are weak and this ruining the gene pool which currently is already rather buggered, thanks to widespread healthcare and the practice of medecine. We have a population boom and there's just no more room, so nature takes it's course, but man fights nature...in the end, nature created AIDS...you know...you can't beat mother nature!
Let the weaklings die, the strongest will survive. It's really just that simple. If we want mankind to thrive and for diseases to fall back into the unknown, the world be a better place for everybody, stop supporting those on welfare, especially those welfare moms who produce more kids just to get more money from the government, it can be considered extremely harsh, to allow them to die as such from starvation, but they'd only die if they did not get off the couch and do something about their predicament. People should stop getting pampered so much, if someone is too stupid to make enough to make ends meet and eat, let them just die over the winter, one less person to worry about, less taxes due to less welfare support, more money for those who do well and make something of their lives, creates more inspiring a work experience for all those who are capable, to achieve much more than they currently are, and thus propelling mankind. The weaker links lower the grade curve of mankind! Some might flip out on me now and call me crazy, stupid, illogical, irrational, dumb, and what not, frankly speaking, I don't give a damn what you all think, I have a right to my opinion and if I feel like expressing it, I damn well will! It's what makes me great! Canada is predominantly socialistic, and in all honesty, this constant pampering if the lower gene qualities out there, just is not doing the world a favour in the long run. Let them fail, let them die, let nature sift through the chaff and keep only the best genes in the pool.

I respect the fact that Fred has the final decision. He's clearly earned that right. This doesnt mean that his decision is correct, though. I'm sure Fred is wise enough to know where he and this site would be without all the members.... nowhere. The way I see things, Fred is in a unique position and I just dont see how banning him is going to help the situation at all. All I'm suggesting is to allow Ray back so that he can have more positive voices talking to him. Granted, few of the members here are likely qualified professionals that could help Ray in a clinical sense, but how can it hurt for him to participate in this dialogue??? Who's to say that someone here might just say something to him that helps get him steered in the right direction?? And as I said before, if he behaves inappropriately, then ban him.

It's Fred's board, he can do whatever he wants. I love it when forum members, not just Terb, think they have a say when someone is suspended or banned.

Hey... someone's life could be on the line... it's not about anything else other than that. Just because it's Fred's board doesnt mean he's right.

Wow you sound like a madman. I hope we never have you in a position of power. Seems you care much more about money than human lives.
Take care with that extremely bitter and cynical view of existance. Have a happy life bud.

You know, there was a man who once thought like you do. His name was Hitler. Cheers.
