Fuck cable and satellite . I have a digital antenna and get 21 channels. There are about 6 that are useless because either non english, shopping shit or bible thumper crap channels. I do have Netflix and with that I have more to watch than when I had satellite.
Sums up pretty much how I feel about cable, overpriced and doesn't really give you jack shit. Hell I don't think I even get 21 channels. With things like netflix, torrent sites, tons of streaming sites that allow you to watch any show you want for free if you are willing to put with annoying ads and video quality that isn't always the best. I have ZERO need for cable.

More than one site out there, a few ranging from 90-105 USD/yr....suppose you name the one that charges $45/month since you're such an expert on a system you don't even have?
Your post,...

The bottom line is that it's feasible to cut the cable cord if you're not interested in watching live sports. But if you want to see live sports, you're not going to be able to get the variety for cheaper than cable.
YEP,...that's pretty much reality.

I find talking to people at work that the youngsters up and coming from college are shunning cable.

I am tired of the rates.... and the better rates when you threaten to leave..... and then the constantly messed up bills when they give you a deal.

So........ not being too in tune with the new technologies..... can anyone recommend a decent digital antenna and where to grab them. Really... the only channels I watch are CBC, CTV, CP 24, Sportsnet and TSN.

I download TV series, and will likely subscribe to Netflix.

So I will probably switch Cable providers to a Tech Savy or a provider like that.

Looking at possibility of IPTV box and a a possible subscription.

Anyone that's been there..... am I on the right track?

Less popular major league sports (eg F1, FIVB, Rugby, FIFA etc) can easily be streamed for free off EU channels (UK & Germany in particular have great selection)
You do require a VPN though as they block north america

Heck I even found out the CFL is actually available all games live & in HD on European side of the ocean, go figure
Here we get blackouts how strange is that
I did try streaming some of the EPL games on the European links, and all I can say is that it is very frustrating and the quality is just not the same as watching the games on HD cable. Otherwise, I would have said goodbye to cable as Netflix has so much to offer, especially the USA VPN, using hola.org

Wow you are truly dumb. What part of "more than one site out there" did you not understand? But then again I think you're the same clod who kept confusing TERB with the Toronto Real Estate Board...

You are too stupid to help, but if anyone other than you wants to PM for specific IPTV providers in the $10/month range, I would be happy to pass that on.
FO,... loser.

I believe it begins in March or April. Not sure how this will work as there must be some sort of base package you are going to have to get in order to do so.

The Rogers basic package is $24.99 per month.

Looks like trimmed version of "Digital Lite" ( or "Lite TV" ) package which is only $15.99/mth.
Digital Lite give you channels 2 through 24 except for CBC News (23). You also get radio stations and lots more misc channels such as Fireplace and Aquarium channels, OWN and CTVNews. Standard Definition (SD) Digital box is included.

Based upon the above pdf document, Rogers basic package only gives you channels 2 through 22.
It looks like CP24 (24) is dropped. Can't tell if radio stations and Fireplace channels are included.

My Channel listing is based on Scarborough and Pickering area.

The only plus I see is you can add "theme" packs to Rogers Basic Package.
Not sure if its worh additional $9 increase over "Digital Lite".

Question: is digital box included in $25 or is it additional rental $$ ??

Here's a quote from one of several sources Googling Rogers Digital Lite brings up:
Digital Lite is not advertised because it's a low ARPU product that Rogers doesn't want to promote. Reps are only supposed to offer it if a customer asks for it specifically, or as a last ditch attempt to prevent a potential sale from walking or to prevent a customer from cancelling. Also there are variations in the channel lineup depending on the area. Customer care can read out a list of channels if you call them.
They all say roughly the same thing.

No wonder we need the CRTC sitting on these guys and forcing 'How To Sell' lessons down their throats. As you pointed out, they already had a better product and at a better price. If they'd actually offered it to customers instead of hiding it away and making us fight to even learn about it, they'd have a freer enterprise than they're now stuck with.

It's stuff like this why we need TERB. So Rogers reps only offer if the customer already knows about the product. I never knew about Digital Lite until now.

Sorry fuji. I have to agree with FAST on this one.

I have Rogers Cable VIP package. Sure it's more than I'd like to pay but it offers lots of channels both my wife and I like watching together, as well as the ones only she or I like. It also includes an HDPVR with a Terabyte of storage that records up to 8 programs simultaneously. We simply set it to record the shows we like and it automatically records them every week. At the end of 3 years I can buy the HDPVR for $1.

For what we watch, which includes news and live sports, it's the best choice for us at the moment. I run the HDPVR into my 7.1 home theater system then to my Plasma along with a Blu-ray player all through HDMI. The sound and picture quality is fantastic. I also have my laptop connected by HDMI which gives me the option of watching movies I've downloaded or YouTube videos.

We're currently making a list of the channels we frequently watch as there's lots we have no interest in so when the pick and choose option becomes available in December, we may be able to shave a bit off our monthly bill.

I've read the various alternatives but I haven't seen anything that comes close to providing the programming, ability to record multiple shows simultaneously and the picture/sound quality that we currently get. Not to mention the convenience and ease of use. When you factor all that in, it's not not an outrageous monthly expense.

Digital Lite is not HD.
So if you're one of the few people that have a CRT TV it will look fine.
If you have a HD TV the picture won't be sharp.
If I remember correctly you get from channel 2 to 28.
You don't get CBC newsworld or Sportsnet, but there's CTV news channel and RDI.
You get CP 24 and the big 3 U.S. networks.
I have both an HD TV and a CRT (for when I am in the doghouse) but I do much prefer the HD. I need CP 24 because it is packed full of info.

Questions: Is CP 24 available OTA? Is Sportsnet available OTA (probably not).

$18 each for the Sportnet Pack or the TSN Pack. lol.

My existing basic cable is $40 and has the $25 skinny stuff + lots of extra stuff like Sportsnet $18, News Pack $5 (CP24 and some others), and various other channels. Piecing them together would probably be $60 or $70 if I went through it all one section at a time.

I guess I'll just stick with my $40 plan.

However, if you only care about the key US and Canadian networks and don't wanna mess with media box streams or OTA stuff, then $25 seems like a decent deal.

No, from what I hear, some people downtown in some apt. buildings facing the CN tower are getting around 20 channels.
Yeah. You can be in the burbs. As long as the antenna has a decent path aimed at downtown, it should be good. Although, my buddy who lives downtown and does OTA HD (which he says is better than cable box HD as it's not compressed) can still get shaky sometimes. He says that when it's bad weather, the reception can be lousy.

The real question is whether Digital-Lite will still exist as an available option after the CRTC-ordered Skinny Basic goes on-line March1.

My bet is Not. Scuttlebutt says Rogers and Bell have told their sales reps not to offer or even mention Skinny Basic until a customer specifically insists on it, just as Rogers did with D-Lite. I'd bet if you asked for that cheaper option, you'll be told (perhaps even truthfully) that the new Skinny Basic was now the only ground-floor option.
