What is happening in Cuba is a classic illustration of what he wrote: All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.
Cuba is supposed to be an egalitarian communist country. But the elite of the Communist Party have looted resources of the country and live like kings while the teeming majority are left with crumbs.
With the weather suitable for year round farming and plenty of rainfall, Cuba should be a bread basket. Yet, it is woefully short of producing enough food for domestic consumption. And that is why people are starving.
The Eastern Region of Cuba has resources like the Nickel Belt of Sudbury. Nickel, cobalt, chromium, iron ore, gold, etc. are found in abundance. I have attached an article for your reference.
But production is led by the corrupt elite so they can steal and live in the lap of luxury. If it was opened to private investment, mining will boom to the benefit of more Cubans. And the government will be able to import petroleum products.
The embargo imposed by the US only applies to US products. There is no general embargo. Which means, if the economy was managed efficiently, Cuba can purchase what it wants from anywhere outside the US.
The US thinks applying pressure will cause the population to rise up and overthrow the corrupt elite. Unfortunately, its not going to work.
The corrupt elite have an elite defence force with monopoly on heavy weaponry.
