The last fucking thing I would ever want in Toronto was a summer Olympic Games. Peterson probably figures he could wrangle himself some nice 500 grand a year cushy job doing nothing on the committee steering the fucking thing.

The summer Olympics are an insane waste of money. With every passing Olympics, it's grown bigger and stupider all in the name of outdoing the Olympics just prior. Billions upon billions wasted all in the name of to see who can run the fastest? Who fucking cares.

In 96, I was all for Toronto getting the Olympics. At the time, I was sold. I thought it would be GREAT. Now, 20 years on, I see what a colossal waste of money it is. The "Bread not circuses" crowd has my vote on this one.
I agree- its people like David peterson who think up these ideas. If we had a law that said any of these games supporters or planning committee folks can't be paid we would see a lot less enthusiasm for this stuff.

I just wish we could focus on what we need- subways and fixing roads and community housing

This would depend on how we define "success" for the Pan Am games. If the revenue that Toronto and the surrounding municipalities involved in the Pan Am games generate offsets the costs involved (both the construction/renovation of athletic facilities, security, HOV lanes, co-ordination of sporting activities, etc.), then that could serve as a benchmark on whether a bid for the Summer Olympics is viable.

Would love to see the creative accounting that would make that case.

I get around.
Toronto applied for and was short-listed for the 2008 Olympics, coming in 2nd to Beijing. So we were close then. The Pan Am Sports Organization is affiliated with the IOC and some of the infrastructure built for these games could be used for the Olympics.
Peterson is correct.

I thought the Olympics was awarded on the basis of the best bribes. What other explanation is there for Sochi?

It won't even pay the "operating costs" of the games

The summer Olympics are an insane waste of money..
not always true

the LA Olympics made a profit because they already had the infrastructure built from their previous Olympics

nothing in our games has been overbuilt

an unadorned needed home for Olympic swimming team and a bike oval

only 2. 4 billion minus revenue for facilities we needed such as express train to airport etc

the Olympics could make money

the problem is the Olympic committee taking bribes with no concern for the workers of the country
the Olympics cold make money if we nail them

Totally agree, but I think there's a greater need to ensure no bullshit or corruption.

Forget the Olympics - waste of money. No way Toronto does it and doesn't overspend boatloads of money. We could instead use that money to bribe FIFA and bring the World Cup to Canada!
