I've been surprised in both of the first two episodes. I thought the brute strength of the Gladiator would win out over the Apache in Week 1 but was wrong. I should have learned my lesson in Week 2 when, once again, the brute strength Viking lost to the Samurai.

Next week is Spartan vs. Ninja.

the Jedi is half samurai and half magician. i do agree on both counts... the Apache would out do because of speed and stealth... but in close combat he is toast...( wow my spelling was horrible...dammm you right i need to get out more...)

Have in mind that the battles are really close...Apache and Samurai barely won by like 52% or something, out of 1000 battles.

Very addictive show. Although some of the weapons match ups seem a little odd. Shouldn't the katana be compared to a long sword?

I think the weapon match ups are meant to even out the score to keep the viewer in "suspense."

It's like that show Dogfights on the History channel. Even when a Jap or Vietnamese fighter plane was hopelessly outclassed, they'd always find something to give it higher points to make the match seem closer than it really was.

The problem I have with the show is that they're not explicitly accounting for differing levels of experience. Or, at least, they should be having a category for that. Someone like the samurai that's been training his entire life has an unfair advantage over the "weekend warriors" of the Vikings (who weren't raiding all the time and definitely weren't training to the degree the samurai did). The experience factor is mentioned on the show but no weight is ever given to it.

I agree with the Apache over the Gladiator 725 to 275.

BUT.............

I have to disagree with the Samurai over the Viking. Thought the Viking should have been victorious. And it was close - like 525 to 475.

Sparta was well known for its fighters and more importantly its introduction of discipline.

The Spartan fighter was able to win because of the introduction of the Phalanx, not because the individual fighter was so much superior.

Fights between armies were often just mass riots, with whomever turning to run away first being the loser.

The Spartan's introduced a wall of shields that made it very difficult for a mob to penetrate. The Roman army later adopted this tactic to great effect vs the rest of Europe.

The Spartans (if I remember my ancient history correctly) were a society that did not look at women as a pleasure, but only as breeding vessels. "True love" could only be between two men. The Spartan command took advantage of the fact that men were fighting with and for their lovers.

Individual Spartan vs Ninja? Ninja would win. Group of Ninja vs Phalanx of Spartans? Spartans would crush them.

I also love the doctor telling us that you would be dead if sliced in half by that thing? Really? Yeah I guess we need the doctors' opinion lol

the indvidual factor is definitely the killer...I don't think a 1000 Samurais would have a chance against a 1000 Vikings. But 1 on 1, Samurai no doubt.

I'm still waiting for a pirate vs ninja confrontation.

The thing is, I'm putting into doubt the matchups here. According to The Art of War, there are 2 types of warfare: High warfare and low warfare.

High warfare is the battlefield, with armies clashing.
Low warfare is the stealth, traps, guerrilla warfare type.

It should be Apache vs Ninja, Spartan vs Viking (or Samurai)... where comparable tactics are used, but the difference lies in their application and local weapons used.
