Two important caveats are in the article and should be noted: "It should be stressed that the activity at FOB Wilson does not mean Afghan police and army officers are engaged in an epidemic of juvenile sodomy"

and "Islamic justice - clashes with our version of the law and the consequences for breaking it."

It isn't attractive, but this goes to the fact that when States consider foreign policy - it comes as a harsh reality that the world is filled with devils: large and small, actively hostile or friendly. Not devils and angels.

I think it is good to remember this article next time the newspapapers
print an article about how the canadians are responsible for girls being able to go to school in Afghanistan.

A valid point. But in the larger picture is it not better to have a "slightly friendly devil" rather than an "actively hostile devil?" Certainly I'm not arguing that Afghanistan is "angelic."

There's plenty of evidence OBL and his Muhjadeen were trained and funded into a well organized militia that helped defeat the late USSR in their 80s Afghan War by the Reagan administration.

Everyone of those presidents did similar things during their administrations to what was done during the Reagan administration.

It seems then that you haven’t read George Crile's Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of the Largest Covert Operation in History It should be noted that Representative Wilson was a Democrat. It should also be noted that almost all the aid to the mujahideen was distributed by Pakistan not by the CIA directly and therefore to whom it went was principally determined by the former.

Also Crile wrote about Osama bin Laden "It is ironic that a man who had almost nothing to do with the victory over the Red Army, Osama bin Laden, came to personify the jihad."

Thus far most histories of the Reagan administration don't reflect your viewpoint. However, that is neither here nor there, as I doubt that either of us will still be around by the time the archives are opened and the first really accurate histories of the period are written.

that's a sad story danmand.

Perhaps it's relevant to point out the stories from the days of Taliban rule were much, much, much, worse.

Were they? The Taliban stopped opium production.

No they didn't ... they stopped independent drug lords only to run their own operations or taxed those they allowed to stay in business.

The ban you mention came after a series of bumper crops the Taliban and their buddies harvested and was seen as a means of raising the prices of the crop and an attempt to gain acceptance in the World Community.

Stop spreading myths Dan.

Opium production has increased after the Nato invasion.

danmand,

Really, I'm saddened by your question. The Taliban regime was perhaps the most horrific regime in the last half of the 20th century.

Let's begin (though it's sad that this is necessary):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taliban_treatment_of_women

http://www.edu.pe.ca/montaguehigh/grass/socialstudies/genderequality/cult3.htm

http://www.rawa.org/burning.htm

http://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/6185.htm

http://www.now.org/issues/global/afghanwomen1.html

But if you're really serious about the atrocities of the Taliban regime, read this (if you have the stomach):
