While half tons are plenty capable in work and play, you can't compare one with a 3/4 or full ton truck. I think my towing capacity on the Tundra with my configuration tows like 9,900lbs. or something. When you take a Dodge 3500 dually diesel (which is a lot of truck) I think it's close to 22000lbs! I could be off a touch on numbers, this is from memory, but WTF, more than double? Seriously? Now, realistically I would never have to tow this much, it would nice to be able to tow what I need with confidence.
My 1 Ton ( single rear axle ) can pull over 20000lbs . No problem . But the thing is your hitch has to be able to handle that weight. My 5th wheel hitch is an automatic slider able to handle 16000 or maybe 15000lbs . If I wanted to pull more I would have to get a much larger hitch . The truck itself has the power to pull 20000 lbs no problem .

Even if your not going to pull the maximum weight , it's always nice to have the extra power and towing capacity for safety on the highway .

My RV trailer weights 10,000lbs empty . When I go up North it's packed for 14 days of dry camping . So I have to bring everything that's needed . Nearest store is 150k back to town. Behind the RV I hook my 16ft boat and trailer . The boat is even loaded with stuff . You can never bring too much when your camping 150k out in the middle of nowhere . The big Dodge pulls everything . Used to use my 3/4 ton ( Dodge diesel) for that which was fine as well .

Going up the hill in North Bay or New Liskeard is no problem . Just hit the fuel peddle and away you go .

Gotta love that Jake Brake on the Dodge . Works really well going down hills and on the highway . Saves on my truck brakes and trailer brakes which are expensive to replace .

I drive an F250 diesel. What did you want to know?

I'll tell you what I think of my truck.

It's hard on gas.
It's an uncomfortable ride. When I buy a timmies and put it in the cup holder, coffee ends up all over the place. I've actually thrown out my back a couple times on rough roads.
It's a 2WD, and it's the worst vehicle on the road in slippery conditions. I've gotten stuck in some ridiculous places. OTH, the 4x4's are more maintenance.
It sounds like a freight train.
It's got 440k km's on it and still going strong
I have the extended cab, as opposed to no cab or the full cab. The backseat is just a bench, and uncomfortable as all hell. But I do have the 8 foot bed, except....
While it has been handy for work, I rarely actually use the bed. The most weight I've had in the back is 1700lbs, and it was nothing.
When I haul my boat around, it's like I've got nothing at all attached. It's a beast of a hauler. I also have the turbo for extra power. But again, I'm rarely hauling stuff.
You can't just zip out to the local store. If I want to do that I take my wife's little car. So much faster and easier. Taking the truck out is a mission. Oh yeah, one more point...
Parking is a fucking bitch. I hate parking the thing.

My next vehicle will be smaller, more comfortable and better on gas. While I would prefer another diesel, it's not my driving motivator.
Not gonna be my daily driver, got smaller vehicles to go around town and whatnot. What year is yours?

Dodge has announced a 3l diesel for the Ram, so if you don't want a heavy duty truck, it may be a good choice.

Parking ... he he ... So true . Not made for zipping around the city . I've got a Mega Cab. Lots of room in the back seat area . 60 -40 split rear seats . When I fold them down it's like having a huge bed in the back . Room for two to sleep , no problem . Truck box 6ft ... 6in.

The ride is the same as a 3/4 ton . I took many test drives before I ordered mine . My 1/2 ton has a smoother ride but that's normal .

Saw that as well. Good choice also but if I go with the Dodge, it has to have the Cummins.

The 'Yota is a great truck and I still enjoy driving it but I want to be able to tow pretty much anything I need with confidence. Tundra's good for towing (comes with transmission cooler, tow/haul mode, etc.) it's just not as capable of towing "whatever".

But then you are stuck with a harsh riding heavy duty suspension and all that extra shite. From what I have read the Cummins is a tough engine, but not particularly refined. The 1/2 ton will be a much more livable vehicle.

Got a half ton already. The Tundra, which I can't speak highly enough of, but I want something that can tow pretty much anything I need. Ruling out any half ton. I have also been looking into the gas variants of the 3/4- full ton models, I am more likely go with the diesel for longevity.

Have a GMC HD with Duramax 6.6 liter. 400HP with 765 foot pounds of torque. Quiet for a diesel. Exhaust brake is great as hardly use the foot brake anymore.

It does use DEF ...Diesel Exhaust Fluid. I fill tank about 3 times a year. Transmission is the same as they put in Tanks. Heavy truck at almost 4 tons. Very fast and quick acceleration that will pull away from almost anything on the road.

Never had any problems with anything in truck. Should be good for half a million miles.

Only neg is fuel filter is very hard to change. One has to remove the entire inner wheel well to get to the filter to change. No other way around it.

Dodge even has the 3/4 ton in a Mega Cab , short box 6ft .. 6in . Lots of room in the back seat area for 3 big guy's . Fold the seats down in the back and now you have lots of room for just about anything . Only problem is that you can't find any used ones . Ordering a new one takes about 7 to 8 weeks .

Sure the 3/4 ton ride is not as smooth as the 1/2 ton on very rough roads but once your on the highway pulling what ever you'd think that your riding in a limo . You are , a truck limo he he .

It takes a while to break in the diesel engine . I had to drive 500k and not over 80k a hour . Now if you wanted to tow something very heavy , you can't according to the manufacture . Another 500 k pulling a trailer around but nothing super heavy like a RV . After all that then you can pull what ever you want. It's all written in the owners manual under break-in period .

When it comes to buying fuel stay away from the small mom and pop gas stations . You don't know how fresh that fuel is . The refineries make 2 kinds of diesel fuel . One for winter and one for summer . In the fall some of the smaller gas stations haven't converted to the winter fuel yet which is thinner then the summer fuel . That summer fuel can screw you up being so thick that you'll have problems starting and keep it running when winter comes . It has happened to a few people that I know .

Don't use farm diesel . It's garbage . It will clog up your filter in no time . Have seen that happen as well .

I have Ram 1500, for daily use. I also have an old f350 diesel. Amazing machine. Rough ride. After a couple of hours behind the wheel your ass hurts. Two of my friends have a f250 and a ram 2500 diesel(2011). The Ram has a smoother ride. Both are noisy. If you live in the city you have to check the local by laws. In erotic okie you are not allow to park them in residential properties. If your neighbours complain you'll have to remove them.
Toyota makes an amazing diesel machine for the Tundra, however you'll have to go to southamarica to buy it. Is being market an Hellix I think. It's a lot quieter than Americans engines.

Illegal to use farm diesel. Big fine if you're caught

The Toyota's great and more than enough "truck" for most, but when compared to 3/4 and full ton trucks, half tons are pretty much just cars with boxes.

The Ford has the DEF filler beside the fuel fill now. Their's is an International built diesel. Always get the one they put in the big rigs, not the smaller engines.

The Cummins is top and the GM tranny, the Allison is tops too. It would be a nice pairing.

Dodge has better pricing, I too am not big on Dodge as I don't like their looks.

GM's diesel has been around a long time, you can't go wrong there.

Parking these beasts is a problem. They don't fit in parking garages. Parking spaces are smaller today than they used to be, in all aspects. They can't be parallel parked as spots are too short.

Great for towing though, as J H has said. When you buy the right truck for what you are towing, these things can haul alot and that's what they're designed for.

How much do you need to tow? Unless you are one of the horsy set.. the I can see a 5.7l Ram which can tow over 10000 lbs..
