OTHER people claimed that the mascot was chosen to HONOUR.

I was saying that IF THIS IS THE CASE then they are going about it the wrong way.

Any mention of honouring that I did was in the context of responding to other people. I don't believe teams are currently honouring natives by their choice to stick with racist cartoons. If they honoured these people they would listen to the complaints that begain in the 70s vs redskins and indians

Well... we could outlaw all native references from all sports teams and while we're at it outlaw all native styles in art, fashion and graphics (unless it is created by a native) due to cultural appropriation concerns. I am fine with that if that is what they want, but the result will be even more cultural obscurity and they will simply be off the radar of society as a whole .

You're using a slippery slope argument.

I think the key here is WHAT is the image and HOW is the image used. I think the Blackhawks logo was way more classy than the Indians logo. But that's just my opinion, if native groups don't like both logos than they should go.

Damn, I can't find a link now. I vaguely remembered McKayla Maroney (White Irish American) once made her eyes look Asian and she was roundly criticized for that. Apparently, some people thought it was insulting to real Asians.

Was that the gymnast in the olympics? The way I remember it the issue was that she made a sour face because she was made she didn't win but I don't remember a racial element to it.

If there was a backlash that's ridiculous as people narrow their eyse when they are made.

I don't know if people remember the white point guard jason williams..... during a game he once gestured a machine gun and made some sort of comment about vietnam to some asian fans in the stands. At least that's how I remember the article.

We need more ....not just a few.
No, we just need to listen to the posts that the few native background posters have made here.
Start here, and read through some of Camilla's posts, for instance.

The thread here really is representative of the discussions you hear elsewhere, where the voices of natives are drowned out by posts by non-natives telling them how offended they should feel about a host of issues.

I have and I get them. I know if more of them speak up, then those messages wouldnt be drowned out by those non indigenous/native people.

I dare him to say that to Muslims and/or blacks. He'll be missing a couple of teeth. Asians (except Muslim Asians) are easy targets because they are law abiding and docile.
