I was out with the SO last Monday and although the food was good...the service was to my standards was below average...food was delivered late to our table...and that was it...no interaction...not even the usual "how's everything so far"? from the waitress on a not so busy day...a lot of vacant tables...I was still going to tip but the SO insist she pays and she gave $5...I was gonna give $10...then on our way out she just said...she wasn't gonna leave any tip but changed her mind....

As someone who worked a long time in the industry I fully back people who under/don't tip for shoddy service. Never reward bad service.

I don't, and I can tell the difference between a bad server and a slammed one.

No tip
Leave 3 nickels
Leave nothing, servers might think customer just forgot and they will continue with bad service.
Leaving 3 nickels is a statement,I/the customer didn’t forget and this what you/the server deserve for shit service

Very good point.
When I did that I only left a penny. But I don't have pennies anymore.

In a place far, far away
Bad service no tip and I point that out to the manager....

If server is slammed then that is a different story.

If food is bad, as in I no longer wish to eat and need to throw up bad I point that out to the manager but I tip the server as it is not their fault.

If place is disgusting, I need to go home and try to wash off the feeling grossness I post a review.

Halibut House is such a place. The cooks keep a bin of water beside the deep fryer and after breading the fish dunk their hands to rinse off the batter. A sink is a foot away. I equate that to reusing toilet paper after you have wiped your ass with it.

I still will tip. I think tips are pulled together and divided among all the staff. It's hard work and my server might have head a bad day. For me not to leave the tip the service or the food would have to be really bad, but then I would actually complain to the menage.

Some of you are leaving large tips while the waitress and chef are putting "special" touches on your food in the kitchen.

You can, but many can't.

People think because they see empty tables it's not busy. Maybe there was only two servers for the whole place with big sections but they don't look busy because it's spread out. Not to mention, who knows what was going on in the kitchen. A few new guys that are slow and the kitchen is totally backed up.

Unless there's something egregious, I'll still tip. I'll just tip well under the going rate.

@OP, by saying the food was delivered late to your table, what do you mean? Was it cold when it arrived, like the server took forever to bring it from the kitchen? Or by late do you just mean it took longer for them to make your food than some relative expectation you had?

Well it wasn't the usual amount of time you would think. I've been to the same place when it was busy and food arrived faster...I really don't mind that...but it's pretty much the service...It was like when Mcdonalds let you wait for your order in a parking space and they bring your food to you...then bye bye...only time she came back was to bring the bill...not even smiling the whole time...from the moment she took our order...it was close to home so we sometimes go there but I can't say we were regulars...

Personally I would still tip if the service isn't up to par but at a reduced amount from usual, with one exception. If the service was characterized by rudeness, I won't tip and will place a complaint to the management (or give them a poor review).

Long time ago Men's health had an article about this, their advice tip 1 cent, and leave your phone number.

I have done it twice in my life never got a call.

I started doing it because the first time I complaint, the manager comp our meal, which I don't believe it's fair to the restaurant. Why should the restaurant suffer a loss because if a person having a shit day or being a bad server.

The other thing I did once, and I have to say I enjoyed when I saw her reaction.

I order muscles in white wine sauce, I hate marinara sauce and they had both. Made it very clear to her that I wanted the white wine sauce. It was a very fancy restaurant.

Well she shows up with muscles in red sauce. I politely told her that's not what I order.

She tells me it was very rudely, so much for the customer being right, but if I want it change she will have to charge me.

No problem I told her, I was paying for everyone and knew the bill would be well north of 400.

I tip 10% and deducted the 21.00 from her tip, which I wrote all the details on the back of the bill.

I heard herd at her station with the others, who fucking those that?

I told her a customer you were rude to and wasn't happy with the service.

Side note, why do we tip waiters, but never Tim's or other fast food workers, they work way harder and their job really sucks.

Well said icespot!

By the way I may be the rare ones who do tip at fast food joints and I can't recall encountering rude services at fast food restaurants myself. However once or twice, I did experience rude service at so-called "fancy" restaurants lol.
