Mourinho would take the job. He said he didn't want to manage in England as a club coach. Still think that if the FA got some sense, and presented an offer to him, he would accept.
I also think Mourinho would be great choice as well as Benitez (great at cup competitions other than this year's CL) they both know the players and are excellent tacticians. As well, Benitez is not afraid to sit Stevie Me.

Marcello Lippi was asked if he would like to coach England.

His reply:

"Of course I would, but it would never work. In coaching, communication is everything and I don't speak English."

I'm crushed. :(

As long as Capello doesn't banish Beckham from the team like he did with Real, I won't complain too much.

But expect some boring, defensive football.

as long as the man gets results who cares if they kick the ball back and forth for 89 minutes!!! one thng I am really tired of is the oh he doesnt speak English, Greece won a tournament with a German who spoke no Greek, and I am pretty sure Gus Hiddink's Korean and Russian isnt that fluent.

Capello doesn't deserve to be accused of being a "boring defensive play" coach. Remember the Batistuta, Totti, Montello attack? It' more accurate to say he does the job with what he's got his disposal. He's a very pragmatic guy. As for defending, every good team is built from the back.

Capello has been a successful manager mostly in Serie A with Juventus and AC Milan. Latest success was with Real Madrid. I sure he's a great coach but I'm not sure if he can get the best out of the English Players.

The plus, the style he likes to play is suited to England.

His successes have mostly been in league play. When it comes to tournaments, elimination formats, he's not been nearly as successful - though he does have two, (I think) international titles, one a CL. As a league coach, I believe he's been successful everywhere he's gone, winning multiple championships with Roma, Milan and Juve. He is an elite coach, one of maybe a group of five other men.

If I put aside my belief that a national team's coach should be of the same nationality, then I have no trouble recognizing that England was very very lucky to get Capello. They'd have been better off with Mourinho, but he was never serious about taking the job. If Capello can't get a better performance out of this bunch of (over rated) English players, then it's probable that no one can.

Yeah Lampard does think he is the annointed one doesn't he. He needs to be taken down a peg or two.

My starting 11, plus squad to make up 23 if England were to have been in Euro 2008. Assuming all fit and willing to play (hear that Carragher, Scholes)

Carson, Micah Richards, Ferdinand, Carragher, Ashley Cole, Joe Cole, Hargreaves, Gerrard, Aaron Lennon, Rooney, Owen

Subs/Squad

Robinson, James, Terry, Ledley King, Campbell, Scholes, Beckham, SWP, Ashley Young, Crouch, Dean Ashton, Gareth Barry

Comments/thoughts/additions/deletions?
Not bad, a little heavy on central defenders in the subs/squad (Terry, King and Campbell), I would probably remove Terry or Campbell and replace with Gary Neville, but overall hard to argue given your assumption on fitness.

Match of 2007: Ac Milan 4 Boca Juniors 2

Like Sven, Don Fabio brought a scudetto to Rome, for that I wish them both nothing but success. Unfortunately I fear that Don Fabio will become cannon fodder; his system is reliant on strong goaltending and England haven't had any since Peter Shilton.

I'm not certain that Capello's temperment and approach is suited for the English style of game. As much as any team will be molded in the image of it's coach, I believe there is too much of a gap philisophically between Cap and the way English players are bred.

Cap represents a more traditional, conservative style of game, one which the English ( as well as myself and many Italians) have always abhored in pre-Lippi Italian soccer. Having said that, it's all about bringing home the hardware and Cap will instill a pragmatism that England isn't really known for.

I was glad that the Italian Federation went with Donadoni instead of Capello.
Grandmaster Lippi, I feel, single handedly turned the Italian National soccer program around and Donadoni has continued with a progressive and creative style, both in tactics and player selection/management.

I sincerely hope he can do something with the English squad as I feel that any world or Euro tournament is lacking without England there.
