Regarding England under Capello there was some interesting analysis in today's English papers. Joe Cole was popularly regarded as the best player in the game vs Switzerland (despite Gerrard being the so called man of the match). Gareth Batty has taken some criticism for his poor passing. Some are writing that Owen won't get on the field without someone like Heskie or Crouch to protect him. Also putting Rooney up front by himself was not the original plan. Next time up he might play just behind the front two (whoever they are).

Did any of you see the under 21 team vs Ireland? Bit scrappy most of the time but Lennon and Woolcott impressed.
I thought Cole, Ferdinand and Rooney were the best most technically gifted players by far for England. Gerrard played well but when compared to Spain's midfielders, no where near as creative. A few players looked lost out there: Brown, Cole, and Barry among others.

Caught a bit of the U21 game. In addition to Lennon and Walcott, I thought Milner and Hart were pretty good. The rest of the team has a lot of work to do if they want to be considered for the senior team anytime soon.

Isn't Sepp Blatter a peach.

He no longer even tries to hide his hatred for Italy. He sat next to Eusebio in the belief that being in the presence of the legendary Portuguese star would enoble him. Since Italy was fielding a injury depleted line up, most notably Gigi Buffon, a Portuguese victory was anticipated. And when Italy scored their third goal, within a minute of Portugal's goal, Blatter looked like he had a wet turd in his mouth.

Now Italy must fight their way through one of the toughest groups ever assembled for an international tournament. Add to that the fact that Andrea Pirlo must be feeling slighted by not even making the final three of FIFA's World Player of the Year - although he remains a sphinx about it. The Azzurri would like nothing more than to, once again, make Blatter eat humble pie.

Ain't it cool.:D

Blatter is a twit, I am not sure he has anything against Italy per se compared to other countries. He is trying to ruin the EPL with his 6+5 domestic-foreign proposal. I agree that Pirlo is great, but it's tough to argue that he was better than Kaka, Messi or C. Ronaldo last year.

Let me guess...you are one of those Italian-Canadians who think everything Italian is the greatest and who thinks the whole world of footie is against Italy and that the World Cup is fixed.
Clynnog, are you forgeting that Italy invented footie.:D

Italy doesn't need the world against them, they do a good job of shooting themselves in the foot. Just look at all the caca that's coming out in the wake of Farcipoli.

La Domenica Sportiva devoted an extraordinary amount of air time to Fabio Capello. This begs the question; what every happened to the great English coaching tradition? When English clubs were wining the Champion's Cup annually, they had the best coaches in the world (Paisley, Clough....) now every major club is coached by a stranieri. It's sad really.

In case you didn't know. Started as a competition between English towns in the middle ages, involving hundreds of players and no real pitch. English (Scottish?) sailors popularised it accross the world or so the story goes. :)

You may be right, but it's a dubious claim.

In Medieval England the towns were breeding grounds for warfare, not football. First you had the clan feud between the Cliffords and the Percys that escelated into The War of the Roses. Then you had that nasty bit of business called The Puritan Civil War. Tuscans dont believe that football is an English game, they will tell you that it's a product of The Renaissance.

The games between towns is a historical fact. Don't know exactly when it might have started but would be thinking around the 13th and 14th century, well before the English civil war. No doubt the War of the Roses could have led to some games being postponed :D .

I don't know anything about the Tuscans so maybe they believe they started it as I can imagine lots of people might claim they originated the game.
