The trick is to attack with enough carnage to force your opponent into over reacting and creating a divide between the west and muslims, but no so big of an attack that most muslims would feel that animosity towards muslim is justified. Imagine if OBL got a nuke and nuked NYC, the US would invade afghanistan, but I am guessing that half of the arab world would be so appalled by the nuke attack that they would fight side by side with the US against OBL. A big attack would not work, a small attack will work but not so small that the west can dismiss it.

The US already had plans to invade Iraq before 9/11, so the response to 9/11 was not an over reaction. More like a calculated decision although a horrifically wrong headed one under stupid leadership.
By the way, an imbalanced reaction is not a bad thing depending on the circumstances. Wars are won easier when the balance is in your favour. The US shut down Japan in WW2 thru a show of unspeakable force. Jihadists from anywhere in the world can be made to think thrice about attacks if the west insisted on it.
If you are articulating the Jihadists world plan, that plan is going to fail. They underestimate the tolerance of people in the west, the power of the Internet, the power of education, and the relationship between most Muslims and non-Muslims in western societies. Their worldview is too narrow and vulgar to comprehend this.
It's remarkable really. One giant bomb in Japan and mere decades later we were buying/trading as partners. Who says this cannot be repeated. I like to think of a day when I can travel in to the heart of Syria as a tourist (USA flag on all my gear), and have good relations with all the locals - Muslim, former (or would-be) jihadists from a bygone era and Christian over wine and traditional Syrian dishes. He is Björn Höcke, parliamentary faction leader for the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in the state legislature of Thuringia and is also the spokesman for the AfD in that state. Since September, Mr. Höcke has been organising demonstrations against the German government’s asylum policy.
