Perhaps a version of evil is to find a moral equivalence between a democratically elected head of state and a terrorist.

Not really. It would be theoretically quite easy for a democratically elected head of state to be a terrorist. Whether that leader is in practical and actual terms a terrorist is the real issue. And really, it's not evil to suggest that a certain leader, oh, shall we say perhaps....GWB, is a terrorist. It may be stupid, simplistic or wrong. But I very much doubt that it is evil.onthebottom said:

Osama in Afganastan vs. the USSR (and even against the Saudi Royal Family) is a different story than Osama vs. the western world.
In Afganastan, he was fighting directly against the invading army that was directly opressing people. It wasn't his war as a Saudi but he could easily be considered a freedom fighter. He was an open combattant fighting against other declared combattants. A rich brat putting his life on the line for his beliefs can be viewed as commendable.
He has been an activist against the corrupt government of his home country and although he has not been engaged in open warfare, his quest can be seen as just, at least in intent although not the means as his actions have often resulted in the deaths of innocents. On the other hand, the government is seen as a legitimate power so his actions are treason and I am sure there many who think that he is mainly motivated by a big ego and a desire to gain personal power.
His Jihad against the western world is completely a different story. He has directly targeted civilians whose only offense was living in a culture that he doesn't agree with. This IMO is clearly evil.
The first case is self? defense and only debatable as to whether it was his fight. The second case is debatable whether it is homicide or murder. The third case is clearly mass murder.
