ORILLIA, Ont. — Today is Julian Fantino's last day as Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner.

Fantino says he looks forward to using his retirement as a chance to get back in touch with his family.

He has served for more than 40 years, and has spent time as chief in London, York Region, and Toronto.

He says he is leaving the force in good hands.

The new commissioner, Chris Lewis, officially takes over tomorrow.

Lewis has been Deputy Commissioner of field operations since 2007.

It was the Ontario Legislature that passed the 50 over and stunt driving laws - not Fantino.
Yeah, but he pushed for that to go through. After it did, he was disappointed he did not make it 30 !!

How fast do you think is safe? 200km/hr? Stats speak for themselves on reduced Hwy accidents.
I hate to keep repeating it but the germans had done it succesfully, until traffic volume became an issue. In this case, highway design, quality as well as the drivers and driver licensing areas are too poor for those kind of speeds. And THOSE are the areas that should have been looked at, NOT more useless and unconstitutional laws. I sometimes drive with traffic at speeds close to 140 here in and around Toronto. And there are no problems. Its now thanks to that dumb law that when you have to accelerate to pass and change lanes do you feel a considerable amount of hesitation. And hesitation is the first part leading up to an accident. Fantino just made it worse on the highways and roads, not better.

So you don't think 150/hr is too fast on our highways w all our unskilled drivers and congestion? Sure you can say improve the highways and driver training is crucial, but it's not reality.

How fast can we repeal the BS 50 km over laws .

The Provincial Legislature created that law. The police enforce it. What the hell is your hurry? Do you want to kill someone driving so fast that you won't be able to control your vehicle?

And who do you think was lobbying the Legislature for it, hmmm?
I would think that the Association of Police Chiefs, Association of Fire Chiefs, Insurance industry, MADD, and several other entities.

the law can always be re-written to take the speed down to 30KM

100km is what the 400 series and QEW were built for. The problem is volume and grid lock. The other problem is the drivers on cells, blackberries, multi-tasking, another problem is that many drivers believe they are Paul Tracy and veer in and out of traffic or tailNo you're just wronggate to get one vehicle ahead. Arrive Alive!

if you can't control a modern vehicle at 150km/hr, you shouldn't be behind the wheel.
Right! This topic was discussed some time last year ad nauseum and it went on and on and on and on with no minds being changed on any front. I will admit fewer drivers would be on the road and maybe the dates for road test would be sooner, but right now it's the law and most people like it. If you don't, go and campaign against it and see how much support you get. It's going to be clear even on Terb, which is clearly representative of our society, your stance in the minority.

Fat-tino might be getting FAT pensions from each of these forces.

I don't have a problem with the speed limit, I just have a problem with the ultra-draconian penalties for a first offense. It's like the nutcase mentality of MAD has spilled over to speeding...

I don't think he's been with the OPP long enough, but what's wrong with double dipping. You work in the Arm forces for your 20 then you move to private sector and get another 20, then you're in.

I am happy to see Fantino leave the force. My feelings are that the laws themselves are good in principal but the use of the policeman as the judge jury and executioner in terms of the 50kmhr speed limit offense is both unconsittutioal and unfair to the motorist alleged of the offense. Fantino did heavily infulence this legislation and worked with the government to implement this law. Leaving people in the middle of nowhere without a car for a week and several thouseand dollars pooer is not the right of the policeman to decide. That should be left to our well paid judicial system to decide. IMHO. He was moving towards comunist style police mentality. I am happy he is gone. I hope the new cheif can work with the public to change these situations for the better.

My problem with the penalty is that it overpunishes compared to the risk . Way more people die from drunk driving than high speed but it now seems easier to lose your license for speeding . I consider the new penalties exessive compared to the true danger to public particularly when compared to drunk driving . It was already 6 points for 50kmh over as well as 6 points for dangerous driving . Enforce the existing laws fully and almost the same benifit to safety is achieved without a single event destroying a persons lifestyle , finances , and freedoms . I have never been busted for DUI but from people I know it is easier to beat in court than most people think and easier than it should be .
