I was becoming insulin resistant and knew it. I was getting cravings for sugar and such so i read all about the low carb diets and about diabetics and how they ate. I knew my body very well as in my early life i was a national team wrestler and under 19 national rugby team member in the 80s plus a good hockey player in JR B... so i knew how i should feel. but again i knew what wasn't right and what had changed as i did keep a training log and checked resting heart rates and such.
Most people just need to listen to their bodies and do what feels best for you. We all eat differently but watch what skinny people that eat a lot eat and use food and your blood sugar levels as the great metabolic eveners. But no matter what exercise and watch the quantity of what you eat and do. Replace juice and pop with water you will remove huge amounts of sugar and also calories from your diet that are garbage. Plus if you drink cold water your body has to work hard to warm the water up to absorb it.

Is it possible to lose fat and gain weight at the same time?

At the present I am trying to gain some mass. I have gained about 12 pounds in the last 2 months. Going up from 162 to around 174 pounds. As far as I can tell most of this muscle. My arms, shoulders, chest and back have all become bigger.

But, at the same time, i am not able to lose the layer of fat that I see on my stomach and a few pockets here and there. I don't think I have added fat, but then I don't think I have lost any either.

I am not doing any cardio at all at the moment as I have noticed that doing cardio slows down my muscle building. I do weights 3 times a week. That is it.

My idea is that I will put gain another 10 to 15 pounds and then change my diet and routine to start burning the fat. But, at the same time I am concerned about losing the muscle i have built up if I start doing that.

Is this realistic, or is there a way I can build and shed fat too?

If you're not doing cardio you won't be able to lose the fat, sorry. In general when people are trying to bulk up, trainers advise them to lose the fat first and then concentrate on building muscle- although it doesn't sound like you have a lot of fat, just more than you'd like. But especially when it comes to the stomach, you have to incorporate some cardio.

No offence spatial_k, but you should not be making these statements if you have no clue. You can lose the fat much faster by doing weights only than doing only cardio. Combining the two has a much greater effect. Granted you will probably burn more calories WHILE doing treads, stairs, bike, than you would weights, but the aftermath of a weight workout will leave you burning fat for days after, during recouperation(sp?). Metabolism is elevated substantially for 2-4 days afterward repairing tissue damaged during high intensity weight workout. Lastly can you explain your theory on the stomach/cardio connection?

PS I'm quite well aware of the benefits of cardio.

I don't have a theory, I merely asked a friend of mine who's a trainer because I was curious about this myself. She said that it is doubtful you will be able to see results in the stomach area unless you are doing some sort of cardio activity (maybe this is is different for men and women- she may have thought I was asking about myself.) Also I did not suggest eliminating weights.

I believe I may have been rude in my earlier post. Sorry Spatial, the vodka was talking

Since we seem to have so many work out gurus here....

I have a question for y'all. It will require a little back ground info so please bear with me.

As some of you may know, I suffered a sever knee injury almsot two years ago. I have torn cartiledge and torn ligaments. Still patiently awaiting the surgery to remove the "free floating" cartiledge in my knee and the repair to my ligaments. Since it is a cartiledge injury, it means I experience pain when I do extensive weight bearing (ie. walking for more than about 15 minutes).

So my question, is how can I still get the benefits of a cardio workout, that won't involve my legs? Although I do take my loverly pooch out 4 times a day for 15 minute walks (which does add up to the hour recommended) I know I need to do something that will actually keep my heart in its target zone for more than 15 minutes at a time to see any weight loss effects.

In a nutshell, I can't do bike riding, treadmills, stair climbers, anything which will cause weight bearing on my knee. So if anyone has any suggestions as to what I CAN do that will be just as beneficial it would be greatly appreciated.

Great idea! You can also try jogging in water if your swimming sucks.

You can also try an eliptical trainer as this is less impact or a recumbant bike which bares no weight other than on your ass.

Just out of curiosity is there anything wrong with doing straight cardio as I'm doing about 40-50mins of cycling outdoors each day (provided it doesn't rain). I'm just looking at shedding off a few lbs that's my key goal. On the scale I seem to be burning about a 1lb a week which is good but I'm wondering if there's any negative side effects associated with a straight cardio workout.

Burning fat?

Try a skillet on high heat for 45 min for piece of fat. That should burn the hell out of it.

Yes, the 1 lb a week you are burning may be muscle.

Ditto . Your statement is incorrect any exercise especially cardio raises your metabolism long after you stop doing the exercise.

Here
Weight loss is burning more calories than you consume. There is no loophole in this equation.

Now, you can manage whether you lose fat or muscle based on diet and exercise. Eat protein to fuel muscle growth and to force your body to caniballize its stores of fat reserves for energy. Yes, that's an oversimplified explanation, but its essentially correct.

Cardio exercise uses muscle in addition to the fat burning benefits, and the protein will help to maintain your muscle mass. Light weight lifting will increase muscle mass, and since muscle uses energy, it will enhance your fat loss goal.

You dont need to be a gym rat, an hour per day is sufficient.
