Lisa Lamponelli, Dennis Leary (when he was funny). Young Jim Carrey, Rodney Dangerfield, Norm Macdonald, Dennis Miller, and my favorite Jew Jeff Ross, etc.

For telling simple jokes I liked
Eddie Murphy
Denis Leary
Sam Kinison

These three I felt were more gifted, and didn't just tell jokes, but a whole story.
George Carlin
Richard Pryor
Robin Williams
Agree with Kathleen, Richard Pryor was the greatest joke story teller of all time.

Same. I much preferred the old school comedians.

Actually, the man I consider the greatest comedian of all time did not do standup (for the most part).

I will probably start a different thread.

well I am in shock...when I started reading this thread I was sure that Rodney Dangerfield would get the most votes ....but I tell ya, he don't get no respect....started with his parents, one day he comes home from school and found out they moved.......his wife said I want to go somewhere Ive never before, he says "try the kitchen"......doctor Binny Boom Bah told his wife she had to cut down on sex, so now were down to two times a month, its ok 2 guys I know were cut off altogether. No respect, no respect at all

The immortal Dave Allan. The man could tell a story with his brogue like no other.
And a double threat with the skits he wrote and sacred cows skewered.

His TV show seems quite dated but I worked with him in the 80s and 90s and his live shows were great. Not just standup - also mimes, skits, music. Great guy too. He'd be in a wheelchair after the show and still sign every autograph.

I was lucky enough to have seen John Candy do an impromptu stand up set, while McLean & McLean took their break, at the El Mocambo. He'd had a few pops...and he destroyed!
