I don't have private insurance and every time I visit the dentist, it costs me an arm and a leg. I am now living in a province that has particularly high dental rates.

For example, my last cleaning and exam was $400.

Today I went in for a minor procedure and the dentist pressured me into getting a full exam, xrays, and two fillings done.

She had told me I should get three done, but the other one was just discoloured. At the last moment I asked if we could just do two, and she was taken aback. There was an awkward silence, as if I just swore at her, and her reaction was so unprofessional.

"Okaaaaayyy....." in a very condescending and sarcastic way.

Instead, she should have said, "Sure, no problem, we can always do the other one when you're comfortable.

I didn't want to do it because it wasn't really necessary, I didn't want to do so many at once because it's uncomfortable, and I really can't afford it. The dentist has no right judging me. I am a customer, and she should respect my wishes.

Also, I had one terrible dentist before this who literally botched every filling. I had to replace three or four fillings that she did on my front teeth within one or two years because they were so poorly done. The other dentist at that clinic told me I needed a root canal on the front teeth. Later, I found out that it was a lie, four other dentists I saw after never even mentioned it. I am so glad I didn't do it, because it would have weakened my teeth.

Basically, what I've noticed is that every dentist I've seen is a money hungry and pushing many procedures at very high costs. There is definitely a focus on making as much money as possible by doing as many procedures as possible and taking so many xrays.

Has anyone else felt this way about dentists. I really dread going to dentists because of:

the pain
the sights/smells/sounds
the rude/condescending/judgemental dentists who never have anything nice to say about my teeth
the outrageous bills I get
the unnecessary work they do that damage your teeth
the pushiness

I am so fed up. I wish I had a friend who was a dentist and another who was a dental hygienist!!

I've been lucky with my dentist who isn't crazy pushy and only does what is medically necessary or what I instruct him to do. He's also a young guy so won't be retiring anytime soon. Unfortunately, you're going to have to take your business elsewhere to resolve this sort of issue. Hopefully, you can find a good one.

I only go to the dentist for cleanings because I have insurance.

Otherwise, in Ontario dental hygenists can have their own isolated practices and it's much cheaper than at the dentist.

Well you are looking for lower prices. My place does it for 200 cleaning and exam. Don't go to one in a fancy mall. Try to find one in an old plaza (low rent). I live about an hours drive north from the city core but I go to a place in the Scarbz. Once I switched to a closer place in Markham boom 1 cleaning was 500.

$400 seems high. I get my teeth cleaned 3 times a year and pay around $200 per cleaning, 85% covered. My plan only covers one visit with the actual dentist, but the guy only spends a couple of minutes with me so I guess it's okay.

Your dentist is unprofessional and unethical. I would find a new dentist and make them aware that you have no dental insurance. While I have insurance and have never had an issue, I have friends who do not have insurance and their dentist's know this and charge them a different rate (lower) than those who have insurance.

I hear you. There are so many dental offices nowadays just trying to make money from insurance companies. I hate seeing dentist until I met this one last month. It's called Upper Village Dental Office located just south of Major Mackenzie on Markham Road. It was a completely different experience. It is owned by a husband and wife team and they run the place very professionally and yet super friendly with fun good looking staffs. The equipment there are so modern and my experience there was just like going to a fun social club. Doctor T is super cute and the dental assistant Rena was so much fun to talk to and very cute as well.

I also posted this in Yelp in a slightly different version but some stalker guy from here followed me down to Yelp and posted some nasty comment in there and Yelp took down my review.

here is my review,

I'm covered but the the hygienist seems to always want to take x rays when I go (every 6 months)
I think it's just extra cash they're trying to get from the insurance. I told her I don't want x rays unless there is a legit reason. Who wants to be irradiated? She says the radiation is minimal.
I agree with Gary, dentists are cheaper depending the area.
Also UOT has students doing work for cheaper.

Man, I'm the king of spending money on dentists. Just call me Mr. Implant.

But for my day to day dental work, I found a guy near High Park who is great. He runs a very reasonably priced clinic. He did my crowns and he does my cleaning. I get my teeth cleaned 3 times a year (not every 6 months, and not every 9 months like insurance provides figure.) I have no dental coverage of any sort, so it comes out of my pocket. He charges about $225.00 for a full cleaning and xrays (which I just had a couple of weeks ago.) His hygienist did the work, and no, she's not gorgeous, but she is kind of your milf next door type. But I don't care about that, I care that she knows how to clean my teeth. (Though she does bust my balls about not flossing regularly. (Truth is, I never floss, but I don't tell her that, I just say that I struggle with flossing. She probably knows that means never.))

Anyway, he's a good guy my dentist, I'd recommend him, his prices are neither cheap, nor over the top. I respect him for that.

For those with company benefits, check your policy on frequency of cleanings, x-rays, and checkups with the actual dentist (not the hygienist). Many dental places want you to come in every 6 months but a lot of policies only cover every 9 months for cleanings and 12 months for x-rays and checkups. I got burned on this once and now I pay more attention to this when scheduling appointments.

I think there is an oversupply of dentist plus most people are taking better care of their teeth. The money now is in cosmetics. Anybody here have braces or have kids who have braces? Expensive, eh.

If you aren't covered by a plan, and you can't really afford to get your teeth cleaned three times a year, it's a good idea to be fanatical about flossing. Even if you do get your teeth cleaned regularly you should still floss every day. I floss 2-3 times a day, and it really pays off. My gums are healthy and I only need X-rays every two years or so. My hygienist loves me, too.

The comment about affordability applies to normal people but the people on this Board spend a thousand dollars a week to get their privates massaged. Surely, they can easily afford to have their teeth cleaned.

I've had good dentists, and far too many incompetent dentists and thief dentists.

Dentistry has been out of control for a very long time, there is no government over-site, needs to be fixed.

There was a thread on here talking about a 'hot' dentist awhile ago. You should ask the op for referral and see how it goes. Ask around for recommendations because I am sure everyone you know have a dentist. If you can try to find one who has been around the business the longest. Their equipments are not up to date and their offices are not fancy so they can charge you a lot less. Its worth it even though the dentist is closer to his/her retirement!

Haha, that's so true. Teeth and gums over orgasms if money is an issue.

What province do you live in? Try to find a Chinese dentist who will give you the best price without insurance coverage, and also don't be cheap: have a check up and teeth cleaned every 6 months.
