Hume: Rob Ford is campaign’s main attraction and sideshow all in one

If Rob Ford were anyone but Rob Ford, his dreams of becoming mayor of Toronto would be dead in the water.

But Rob Ford being what he is, his chances are better than ever.

This is the candidate whose every misstep brings him closer to his constituency. He can avoid the truth, break the rules, say stupid things, get arrested, charged, fined, and it really doesn’t matter to Ford’s supporters.

His opponents and the media can attack him all they like, but Ford’s people couldn’t care less.

Should they? Yes, of course. This is a man who would divide council, polarize the city and embarrass Toronto to no end.

But Ford supporters don’t give a damn. They’re mad as hell and they’re not going to take it any more.

Why should it bother them that in the course of 24 hours he would not tell the truth publicly about facing charges in Florida then state that trust is the only issue in the campaign?

That would have stopped a conventional candidate dead in his tracks. Look at what happened to Adam Giambrone.

Should it bother them that Ford, self-described family-man in a city that he says needs a family-man for mayor, was charged with assaulting his wife, though those charges were later dropped?

Earlier this week, Ford stood in front of the whole city — a city of immigrants — and announced that immigrants are no longer welcome here. Not only that — he got away with it.

Spoken by any other politician, such sentiments would have been the kiss of death. For believers, however, it wasn’t racist cant, but Rob telling it like it is.

Ford’s untruths might be harder to justify, but as he likes to say, “I never said I was perfect.”

No need to remind us of that; no politician has ever worn his limitations on his sleeve more than Ford. The man has made no bones about being a fool, an inarticulate dissembler with a weak grasp on reality, but this is a fool with momentum, a man-child on a mission.

To anyone who inhabits one of Toronto’s parallel non-Fordian universes, the prospect of his mayoralty is downright scary. It would set Toronto back years and make us a laughing stock, even to ourselves.

But again, those who would vote for Ford would not do so despite all this, rather because of it.

The rage against politicians, élites, experts, panels and the entire power structure has reached the point where many Torontonians do in fact trust Ford because they recognize themselves in him. He is angry; so are they. He’s confused; they are too. He feels as threatened by change as they do. He, too, is suspicious of things he doesn’t understand. He also rejects complexity and ambiguity. He is a black-and-white, no-nonsense kind of guy, full of bull and bluster in the tradition of Don Cherry, Harold Ballard, Mel Lastman….

And in a culture of civic impoverishment, Ford’s simple message that he alone is looking after taxpayers’ hard-earned money has great resonance. We’re constantly told we’re poor, and that the reason is our profligate councillors. Because of them, Toronto is broke.

This may be simplistic horse puckey, but so far it has worked. Ford has been the campaign’s major attraction and sideshow all in one.

His opponents will have to hope Ford’s candidacy unravels as revelations come out. But regardless how odious his behaviour has been, nothing has hurt him yet.

In the end, though, the thing about a Ford is that he brings out the worst in everyone, not just rivals. With friends like him, who needs enemies?

If the City just did a few simple things No On would take issue with them. If all they did was provide universally necessary services & provide them in the most efficient, economic way possible they would be great...

However... They like every other political body that is allowed to get away with it quickly degenerates into vote buying with taxpayer money in any way possible....

If they stuck to efficient administration of roads...utilities...zoning....policing you know.. the basics instead of catering to every deviant niche interest with a sob story & their hand out it would go long way to elevating their image from NDP/PC shit to regular people.

If they stuck to simple business practices while doing those basic duties they would fare even better.... Negotiate contracts with unions that force them to make Frequent competitive bids for individual projects & services... Streamline &automate in order to eliminate as many tax paid civil service jobs.... the list goes on & on

Ford may not be the sharpest knife in the box or made of the highest quality steel.... But at least he's less likely to stab regular taxpaying people in the back over & over again in the interest of special interests...

No one had to spin his overstatements, untruths and retractions, let alone hs undistinguished record for anything but simplistic right-wing demagoguery.

Ignoring what would be a criminal record here, and his various bad behaviours and poor excuses, what has he actually done with his years on council, and what is his program for making the city better in the future? How does he intend to achieve it?

Like Harpo, no talent or record of anything but confrontation; which makes for lotsa self-righteous posturing and gets nothing done.

The City belongs to everyone, and it's governed by everyone we elect. Not by the one guy who gets the big chair.

Less we forget all of the above are printed by media looking to sensationalize a character to sell papers for profit, the media has taken his words for a spin towards the negative and left out anything vaguely positive meanwhile left the other canidates untouched and washed...so is the priorities of media in Canada these days all "rag" no news, it doesn't help much either when the media is more or less one big conglomerate now.
Also note Ford hasn't retaliated bashing anyone including media but having instead come forward with full explanations in a calm and reassuring demeanor.
This would be the Star and Fords ideas are anethma to the Star HE IS WRONG and they can not allow it to procede

I remember a debate years ago between Barbara Hall and Mel Lastman, and I thought to myself, who would vote for this fool, sure enough people did. She seemed like an intelligent well mannered lady, I wonder if she could have been Toronto's Hazel, instead of all the fools they've had in.

Although, that was a long time ago and I didn't follow her campaign very closely, but part of being a mayor of a big city is presentation and someone the city's residents are proud to see represent their city.

The Red Star, or Pravda on Lake Ontario would love to see their Liberal buddy Smitherman in. But lets face it, Smitherman is a disaster. Great at being a politician, terrible at keeping track of money or understanding policy. He would be much worse as mayor, buying every special interest off with our money. Ford may not be the greatest choice for mayor, but at this time, he seems to be the best choice of the current crop.

Ain't that the truth.

While Ford does come across as a buffoon you have to laugh and the number of NDP wingnuts that he has sputtering and flapping their gums.

You bring up that it would have been a criminal record here. I'm wondering would you feel the same is the crime was using a prostitute? I'm not excusing him, but please don't make comparisons of laws in different countries.

Why does it not surprise me you brought up Harper? It's got nothign to do with this thread. It's a shame OJ.. while I seldom agree with you, I like to respect the opinions of others but that's very difficult to do when the other party clearly has tunnel vision and doesn't even attempt to hide it. Pity, you seem quite intelligent otherwise..

Hume does the architechual collumn...
But if you read his previous work..he hates people who live in the "burbs"...You know like Etobicoke and Scarb.
Hume's take on life is a narrow, downtown worker and citizen, who has no kids, bikes to work and lives in a condo.

I have no problem with his type of lifestyle, but he has a real pickle up his ass about how people who live downtown have more culture, and know truly how to run the city....

Ford, of course rings the bells of the Tim Horton Drive-through type of guy, who's idea of culture is The Maple Leafs...and thinks the cappucino set downtown are out of touch with reality...

I'm going to sit back and watch....

I'm not too worried-- "26%ers, All Countries Have Them". The respectable right will congeal around somebody else, splitting that vote, and Ford is just scary enough that the centre left vote will likely solidly congeal around Smitherman or Pantalone. The poll that puts him at 37%, is an early poll, with a sample of 430 people, and I'm not sure of the methodology (It might have been land line only, which has certain implications for who responds). Mayor Mel had, err, moxie... Even though I wouldn't vote for him n a million years, but this guy is mostly just vile.

You people really want this sleaze bag for Mayor?

Integrity Commissioner slams Ford

Mayoral candidate Rob Ford is in trouble again, this time with Toronto’s integrity commissioner slamming the Etobicoke councillor for “improper use of influence” in soliciting donations for his football charity.

“Councillor Rob Ford used the City of Toronto logo, his status as a city councillor and City of Toronto resources to solicit funds for a private football foundation he created in his name,” states a report from integrity commissioner Janet Leiper made public Friday.

“Donors to the councillor’s foundation included lobbyists, clients of lobbyists and a corporation which does business with the city.”

Her investigation was sparked by a May 4 complaint from a Toronto resident who received a letter from Ford seeking donations to the Rob Ford Football Foundation. The City of Toronto’s logo was on the envelope and letter, which was on Ford’s council letterhead. It also included a watermarked drawing of Ward 2, Etobicoke North.

On the back was an embossed gold seal and the City of Toronto logo and “Rob Ford Etobicoke North Councillor” stamped on the seal. The letter was dated March 19, 2010.

Toronto has strict rules prohibiting councillors from using their position or symbols of the city for non-city endeavors.

Leiper concluded Ford has breached three regulations: those governing gifts and benefits; use of city property, services and other resources; and improper use of influence.

She is recommending that council, during its meeting next Tuesday and Wednesday, adopt her finding that Ford broke the rules and order him to reimburse the lobbyist and corporate donors.

The report says that, when asked about the issue, Ford responded: “I do not understand why it would be inappropriate to solicit funds for an arm’s-length charitable cause using my regular employment letterhead.”

Leiper adds: “He wrote that the complaint had no basis in policy or law and he expressed concern that a ‘worthy cause would be undermined by an inconsequential complaint about the use of letterhead.’”

Leiper said she gave Ford time to reconsider his position in light of the fact he had been warned twice before, last December and February after other citizen complaints, to stop using his position to raise money for a private charity.

Ford, who met Leiper twice and spoke with her twice by phone during her investigation, chose not to revise his stance, she said.

Ford, who polls say is leading the mayoral race, has made his work as a volunteer coach at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School and his foundation a central part of his election campaign.

According to a solicitation letter on city letterhead posted on Ford’s campaign website, he established the foundation to “help start up high school football programs by purchasing equipment that the school can otherwise not afford … Your support will give youth in some of our most vulnerable neighbourhoods the opportunity to participate in an extra-curricular athletic endeavour and will help to provide them with hope for the future.”

In speeches and at debates, he has repeatedly raised his football work as proof of his social conscience and work with the community.

The report was released as part of the city council agenda, one day after Ford admitted to being convicted of a drunk driving offence after a traffic stop in Miami, Fla., in 1999, in which a marijuana joint was found in his back pocket.

He told reporters he initially denied being arrested for pot possession to a Toronto Sun reporter on Tuesday night because he forgot about that charge, which was dropped. He didn’t tell the reporter that, on the date quoted to him, he was charged with the drinking and driving offence, to which he pleaded no contest and was given a fine and community service.

Anybody who is so condemned by the loony liberal lefty pinko Toronto Star must be an excellent candidate for mayor.

Rob is not without his faults but wasting taxpayer money and being a PCE (political correctness extremist) are not among them. I wonder if Rob grew up on the mean streets of Parkdale where one learns early in life to take no shit and kick ass (when warranted of course).
