What is the consensus now on Gill, Leafs fans?

IMO - He has done pretty good. He has been very good on the PK, average in normal situations. His speed can be called into question against quicker forwards, but Maurice has him playing within his limitations very well. I think he makes good use of his big reach and frame intercepting alot of passes, holding the blueline and blocking shots.

I think he will fit right in once the top four is established and he is back in his 5th spot. He is playing too much right now, but he hasn't done anything to really limit his play. Just my opinion.

If you disagree or are on the same plane, voice your opinion.

there's many more, too. he's quickly become Berg's replacement as T.O.'s whipping boy.

It looks like you've already posted the consensus. No need for people to repeat themselves.

Count up these ones and the above "many more" and you've got the results of your poll.

The easy and ignorant statement would be something like "why would anybody want a guy who's played defense for the Bruins in recent years?" LOL - I can only imagine Raycroft's private reaction: Oh my God, they're follwing me here! Will it ever end?

But since I've watched other teams but almost no Leafs hockey so far this season, I can't really comment on how he's doing so far.

Assuming your assesment is true, I still think it's a little high price to pay for just a 5th defenseman.

high price, yes. but so were many UFA's that moved in the off-season.

JFJr did know he would have alot of cheap rookies filling in spots on D this season, so I guess a little overpayment is ok.

however, there was a Dman available that is a defense specialist with the following attributes:

signed for 1.6million per season.
age 29, 6'2" 212lbs., left shot
Ranks 6th in the NHL with 36 blocked shots-- leader of his own team.
averages over 20minutes per game... over 25% of those minutes are on the PK.
NHL's 13th highest for PK time on ice and still with a positive +/-!

so you say... +/-..+/-... is a team stat.? yeah? well wouldn't his goalie have to be one of the top 10 save % ages.. either that or the team as a whole needs to be one of the top 10 in goals for? or one of the top 5 teams in team +/-? I can say he plays for none of the above. Alot of his team's successful PK is solely based on his accomplishments.

These stats could be something you'd expect from a much more expensive player... someone's done their shopping.

I listened to the post game show on the radio last night and Gill was the guest. The fans that called in where gushing over this guy. I dont hate him nor do I think he's fantastic. As long as you dont notice him, he's doing his job. Funny note last night, he and Ian White are apparently being called Fred and Barney by thier teammates for their huge size difference. Thought that was funnier than hell

Well lets see You pay Tucker how much for 30 points ... and you actually pay Blake...

worth it IMO- Gill has improved our PK, our standings in the east conference, our win%age, and has decreased the time spent in our own zone.

with Gill we have blown teams out with greater than a 3 goal differential like NJ, Buf, Philly, NYR's and Washington... earlier in this season we couldn't spare ourselves a greater than 1 goal lead.

I never look at win/loss trade... that's media speculation. a trade happens because two parties come to agreements in terms- who are we to say? but, it is fair game to question the intelligence behind a trade...

and oh, it should help the leafs... but, i don't see how. not much room for a 2nd rounder to crack the lineup in the last few seasons... but, dumping the salary cap does allow for more changes (good), the only problem is, what is a better 2.075M replacement? in next season's dollars???

I mean Andy Sutton is probably the closest comparable and he resigned for 3M with much poorer stats. Curtis Foster is an RFA, but might not ever be able to return to hockey following that hit into the boards a week ago. other comparables? Colin White 3M, Jay McKee 4M, Mike Commodore UFA but expecting 3M+... so given the value state, I don't really know how the leafs can replace him. either way, I agree Gill needed outta T.O. and for that it was worth it on its own.

i think now the leafs are going to have to get really bad before they get any good. i don't see any quick turnaround here... especially by a guy that isn't a big turnaround gm... neither is Burke btw...

i really feel for the leafs and the position they are getting themselves into.

Hal Gill was neither as good as his contract indicated nor as bad as the fickle Leaf "fans" would lead one to believe...

Good luck to him in the playoffs - and watch him shut down Jagr if the Pens are matched up with the Rangers.

true, Gill has always been good on elite talent.

I think Therien in Pittsburgh just knows how to better use Gill's talents... you don't see Gill getting beat in the neutral zone anymore and he's hitting, too.
