I can buy the Katie Holmes thing...the exuberance...the overt show of affection...the leap on the Oprah show...all of that.

But...

I caught the Today show interview with Tom Cruise on CNN last night.

WTF is he yapping about? Since when did this idiot actor become a doctor. I was mortified to hear this goof talk about mental illness being cured by vitamins and exercise?! He claims he knows the history of psychiatry?! SO WHAT! Big shit! For the millions of people who NEED these medications to just function - this is an injustice.

It's bad enough for some, because of the stigma attached to mental illness. Then you hear this goof talk about it like he knows about it.

He should take a close look at who needs meds.

I couldn't believe the excerpts of him slamming Brooke Sheild for take meds for her post partum depression.

I've seen the effects of these meds on bipolars and schizophrenics - obviously "DR. CRUISE" knows something millions of doctors don't. I would dare this meathead to even just counsel a room full of unmedicated paraniod schizophrenics - this I would pay to see.

It's bad enough there's a rumor his next movie is a total bomb - now this.
This idiot is comitting career suicide - I hope this ends it for this goof. The last thing a moron like him needs is fame and a platform to misinform the public.

I know alot of people think he's the nicest guy in the world, but lately seems to have an enormous chip on his shoulder and one step away from belting interviewers. Saw the interview too, and really couldn't fathom his defensiveness.

I think his point (lost on many) is that too many people blindly take the drugs given to them by their doctors, who themselves often get kickbacks from the pharmaceutical companies for using their product. If he has truly researched the history of psychiatry like he says he has, I'd give his opinion more weight than some joe-blow on the street who simply says "Drugs will fix my problems." He is questioning the whole concept of whether or not patients truly NEED the medications, or whether they are simply being given them b/c that is easier than dealing with the underlying problems.

His point, IMO, isn't that ALL drugs are bad. It was that doctors have become reliant on using drugs rather than other less radical but more labourious methods to treat patients. It's much easier to just give someone a pill and pat them on the head rather than dealing with the root causes of mental illness.

I believe he makes some good points. It's his delivery that needs work.

Nah, I disagree. If he was going to belt someone he would have done it to the interviewer that sprayed him with water. I think he's not the type of guy to physically lash out at people.

Maybe not, but he certainly does a good slow burn. Let's just hope he's got that cork down good and tight.

Nah Keebler

Cruise was nasty and dismissive of the poor guy who was interviewing him. He was definitely on the hostile, defensive end of this interview.

The problem with the interview was Cruise eluded that ALL mental health problems were bogus and that vitamins and exercise can or will fix the problems. His delivery on the interview was horrible as well - he LOOKED like a mad man. He had this psychotic look about him (the same look I've seen on some patients) and he came short of belittleling the interviewer for not knowing the "history" of psychiatry and Ritalin.

I felt sorry for the poor guy interviewing him - if you have to make a point - do it calmly and rationally. I would never think of speaking to anybody like that - it makes you look like a crazed scientology freak!

Yeah, well, most people I've met who were into scientology had varying degrees of paranoia about them. I could never figure out if they brought that to the table themselves, or if scientology encouraged it, or both.

Cruise mentions Adderall and I have to agree with him on that. This was prescribed to help people learn better and then they found out it was addictive and now dealers are selling it as a street drug. The FDA still hasnt pulled it BTW

Scientology HATES psychiatry.

Sorry if somebody already posted this

For the record Scientology is very much against psychiatry and the drugs psychiatrics prescribe to patients as a "cure". Believe it or not but Scientolgy has done a lot of research and have exposed a lot of truth about the harm commited by psychiatry and psychiatric drugs. They warned people about the negative effects of Prozac at least 10 years before Eli Lilly was found to have repressed important information about the harmful side effects of the drug they were producing.

Disagree with the religion as much as you like but I have found in matters regarding psychiatric abuse, psychiatric drugs, drug pushing by pharmacuetical companies, et al. that Scientology's stance is without fault.

As for Tom Cruise...People don't expect celebrities to do anything beyond sit and look pretty. So when a celebrity speaks passionately about a serious social issue everyone's feathers get all ruffled. They say he's crazy, I say he's just being a responsible human being.

I agree. What Tom Cruise said was that it's not good to mask the symptoms of an illness by simply taking drugs. Too many people who are depressed because of serious mental trauma are relying on antidepressants to make themselves feel good without solving the underlying problem.

Having said that, let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater. Some mental diseases ARE a result of a chemical imbalance which can be treated effectively with drugs.

Scientology claims that all your problems are the result of having evil spirits ("thetans") clinging to you, and if you would only pay them for the right lessons and access to their patented religious technology, they can help you brush off the nasty thetans and everything will be OK. The idea that you could instead just take a pill and be fine is anathema to their worldview.

Cruise is a crackpot. He might well be a great actor, but don't confuse that with sanity. The guy is a nutbar.

The US Food and Drug Administration raided Scientology offices on 1963-JAN-4 and seized hundreds of the Church's E-meters as illegal medical devices. The devices are now required to carry a disclaimer saying that they are a purely religious artifact. They are used in a Scientology counseling technique known as "auditing".

During the 1970s, the Church and many other emerging religions came under increasing attack from the anti-cult movement. In 1977, as a result of an FBI raid, some senior people in the movement's Guardian's Office were convicted of stealing government documents. In 1965, the Australian government had banned Scientology

The above is from some website I found.

Seems like this "church" is nothing but a cult of some sort.

Not in my never-very-humble opinion... :)
Has he made one great movie? Just one? The only ones I can think of that will stand the test of time (as opposed to disposable summer fare) are:

o Born on the Fourth of July
o Magnolia

Considering how many films he has made, and his patented overacting style, not a very good hit rate. I think Christy Canyon has made more classic films that will stand the test of time!

From what I can tell.. Tom is gonna be more open about Scientology. So many interviewers avoid the topic, and I think Matt Lauer was very polite while being talked down to by an imbecile with a clay table. Hopefully there will be more crash'n'burn episodes as Tom tries to enlighten us all...

I do envy him for banging Mimi Rogers in her prime, never mind Nicole Kidman (though Mimi went on record saying Tom was pretty much celibate... even when married... so who knows).
