Well a lot depends on the type of IPTV Box, but more critical is the Download Speed of your Internet Provider.
Remember that the best quality will be a hardwired connection from your Internet Modem and directly to your IPTV Box or TV.
My IPTV box picture quality is perfect, with a rare freezing from a a very remote foreign TV Channel. Canadian and USA Channels are perfect quality.
What download speed do you have. I find that sometimes I get buffering on busy sports channels, like when there's a important game and other days the same channel has no problems.

I watch a lot of sports as well with very rare buffering or at times freezing. My download and upload speeds are at 500 Mbps. Now I started with some cheap IPTV providers, but their quality was awful with, as you mentioned quite a lot of buffering on sports channels. Am happy with my current IPTV provider that costs me $150 for the year.

You guys have to remember that IPTV technology isnt perfect yet.
Lots of bugs that still need to be worked out.
I think in 5 to 10 years it'll be much smoother

Almost half of Canada has cut their cable TV entirely

When I see the content on cable when I run into it, it reminds me of the time suck that it is.
We have had an over the air antenna on the roof since 2003. First NTSC VHF then later OTA-HD UHF when analog shut down.

Before 4k Cable happened, folks were always surprised at how sharp our OTA-HD signal looked.
We have not sprung for a 4k tv.

We likely pull in more HD OTA here in GTA than any where else in North America.
LA might have more absolute channels but there it is a lot of low def sub channels.

With OTA, our TV gets scheduled. A lot of PBS, some TVO, and lesser Canadian and US commercial linear tv broadcasters. Other than live sport events.

The rest of our media is Prime and Youtube on the TV apple Tv player, or on pour laptops.
We dropped Netflix about 6 years ago. It started geat and ended as mediocre for us.

Do all paid Iptv providers even those with boxes buffer? I hate watching sports and they start buffering.

They all do, but some providers buffer a lot less than others.
Thats why I have 3 providers. A main one, and 2 backups.
Costs me $30/month. Well worth it.

I recently joined Anubis and they are excellent.
They still buffer, but not very much.

Here's the list of top providers:
