Steinbrenner saved the Yankees.....They were the biggest draw in North America team sports during his era.
He demanded excellence and never accepted losing.
Had zero patience though....
He was the kind of owner every fan wants for their own team. But I believe he liked putting across the bad guy image. In this case, bad guy being a synonym for asshole.

I like Aaron....Great player on the field who is his own man off the field.
Although I was young at the time, I'm glad I was able to witness it. The Steinbrenner/Martin saga, the Jackson/Martin saga, the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry, the Yankees/Dodgers rivalry, etc. I hate to admit it, but nice guys are boring.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I was 10 years old watching the NBC baseball game of the week as I normally had back then. I had been following baseball for about 2.5 years and then watched this on live tv as it happened. My jaw was on the floor the whole time. It was better than professional wrestling.
