Pistols are restricted and still registered. It's long guns that are no longer registered, but you still need a license to buy/sell/own one legally--you just don't need to tell the government about it.

If Quebec wants their own registry, that's fine by me, give them the info, but only for Quebec residents, and get it over with.

Without wanting to hijack this thread, what firearms am I allowed to purchase in Ontario without a license?

To carry a weapon, what permit do I need?

In Canada, you cannot carry a weapon, there is no permit that you can get.
You are aloud to buy firearms if you get your licence.
Non Restricted, shot guns and rifles for target and hunting, now do not need to be registered BUT you still need a license. If you upgrade to a Restricted licence you can buy and register handguns and restricted long guns.
If anyone wants to be licenced, or needs more information let me know.
YOU CAN NOT CARRY ANY WEOPONS LEAGALLY IN CANADA!!
Fire arms are only to be used for hunting, target shooting and collecting.

Does anybody think the staff that were employed in this feeling-good gesture will be released? Or do they have jobs-for-life?

You still need a license. Without a license all you can purchase are antique firearms. You can't carry a concealed firearm, and you can only load a firearm in a place where it's legal to use. So only at a shooting range, hunting grounds. You can't load a firearm in your home in Toronto for example because you can't legally discharge in the city.
