Emphysema, probably due to lots of smoking. I would expect most late night shows to be cancelled this coming week.
Tragic loss losing Carson.

Sometimes you see the ads on TV for all the old Tonight Show shows and it always strikes me that there's Johnny sitting there smoking away on TV with an ash tray in front of him, and half of his guests have cigarettes going too. I wonder when that stopped? You never see anyone smoking on TV anymore. It's like when you see the old news footage of Trudeau meeting with the Provincial premiers to discuss the National Engergy Policy and half of them are sitting there smoking.

Not belittling the guy, but I have lost so many people around me from smoking and I always cringe when I see the old family photos at Christmas and everyone has a butt going. It's the stupidest habit to ever ever start into.

Sorry to see you go Johnny. I just wish you never smoked and you'd still be here today.

79 years old and with a life like his? I don't pity him one bit. Here's Johnny!!!

RIP - Johnny. Late night TV took a turn for the worse after his retirement, IMO.

Agreed 100%. Nothing beat Carson's gentle and self-deprecating approach to humour. The Ed Ames clip of the tomahawk throw was, arguably, the funniest bit ever seen on TV. Late-night TV nosedived after he left, and has yet to recover.

He will be sorely missed. :(

Carson made the Tonight Show absolutely hilarious at times. He'll forever be the king of late night t.v.

Away from here.

For most of us who aren't 25, this guy was literally a wing of our interior lives growing up.

Plus, in an age where celebrities do anything for publicity, this guy never bent himself towards the tabloid press in any way. Such a class act.

I remember like two years ago a writer from Esquire got some time with Carson, and he was still as genial and generous as ever--and as private.

I love that guy, and I feel really sad. Imagine how Letterman feels: word was Johnny was ghostwriting some of his jokes in the last couple of years.
