How Shane Doan can help Maple Leafs sign Auston Matthews
Auston Matthews grew up idolizing Shane Doan. Now, with the former Coyotes captain joining Brad Treliving's front office, will this be the edge needed to get the superstar centre locked-down this summer?
I’d say resign Matthews to the same length as McDavid’s contract. By which time the Leafs can take a shot at signing CM as a free agent.
A question. Does the ownership group want to resign Matthews because for the same amount of money it would give the team the best chance to win ? Or is it because it would give them the best chance to sell tickets and merchandises ?

Yeah, in Toronto, especially sports media, still need to learn that hockey is a team game, not the "core" game.
Your point is valid, especially true in this cap era. Just as a fan I hope to see the best player play on my team.
Almost every cup champion is built on a “core”. The problem with the Leafs’ core has been the total imbalance of talent with your four highest paid players are all forwards.
Technically Leafs 4 highest paid players are 3 forwards and 1 defenseman.
Looking at the Vegas salary structure for comparison they have 3 core players in Eichel, Stone, and Pietrangelo.
Then they have 6 players in the 5 to 6 million range who are quite good in Karlsson, Theodore, Marchessault, Lehner, Martinez, and Smith. This is followed by 6 players in 2 to 3 million range in Roy, Stephenson, McNabb, Barbashev, Whitecloud, and Hague who are also good players. That is 15 good to very good to elite players.
Leafs for comparisoin has the core 5 as we know making all the money. Then we have Murray at over 6 mill and 2 players in the 5 mill range in Muzzin and Brodie. Followed by McCabe at 4 mill and Kerfoot at 3.5 mill. The only other players making over 2 mill are Jarnkrok and Holl. There's also O'Reilly at 7.5 mill though.
Vegas has been a cup contender right from the get go and this year the team just looks like they have everything. Elite skill, size, speed, grit, hitters, and depth. They should be the model for building a team.

Also, Vegas rolls three excellent lines and they "spread out" their top talent. Above all, their defense is skilled and on the bigger side and they don't allow driving on the net. It's an excellent organization all around that stuffed the team with quite a few players who are, while not the best, they are proven winners with enviable work ethic and they don't tolerate failure- they fired their coach last year for not making the playoffs, though he took the team in the previous season to the conference final. It's a very impressive team from the management to the players side. Looks like tomorrow they'll be lifting the Cup.

Say what you will about their talent, but Kerfoot and Holl were troopers. Hope they connect with another team.
Big defensemen good, small defenseman bad is not a revelation.
The Montreal team that had a D that cross-checked their way to the finals was already a few seasons ago.
They shipped Sandin out for a reason. They also traded for Schenn and McCabe.
Otherwise they would have had zippo hitters for the playoffs on D.
Muzzin was also injured.
I suppose we'll see a story about big goalies next.

No, but it doesn't mean that Treliving would be correct to do so.
Side note, if Treliving starts screwing up will we be calling him Tredying?
